Batteries are more important than charger. We should have standards form factor like your TV remote’s battery.

Unfortunately, Fairphone is not available outside of the EU. Teracube would be the next stop for a hyper-repairable phone. Google Pixels now have 6 years of security support and Google has teamed up with iFixit to make supplies available. Apparently Qualcomm chips were the blocker on security updates, but Google now designs their own chips. Repairs on Pixels still usually require resealing the phone, but overall it looks a lot smoother than before.

Unfortunately I don’t like Android. And I don’t have time to beta-test half-backed systems like /e/ or UBports. Yep, I am giving an amount of freedom with iOS but mobile can’t be private anyway.

Private from who? Privacy isn’t some global absolute, and some threat models can be secured by avoiding iOS and stock Android.

Apart from avoiding stock OS, 80% of privacy depends on the common sense of the user himself. As seen, using a privacy focused OS and searching with Google an posting in Whatsapp, but claiming the lack of privacy (my nephew 😣)

You can go with LineageOS without any Google services. It’s still Android, but it really is the best you can get unless Librem 5 has made some major strides.

I can’t trust LineageOS. Who is auditing this ? And it can’t even be reasonably audited anyway, check just the repo size.

We could say this from most of big FOSS project unfortunately, except maybe some with reproducible build.

Lineage isn’t a big company, its a community project, But if you don’t like it, as you can see in AlternativeTo, there are a lot of others. FOSS naturally isn’t neccesary also private and secure (Android itself is FOSS), but Lineage or KDE are at least better in this point than a OS made and controlled by Google, offering good and trustworth products. Use an OS produced in the EU, because of the strong privacy norms, which don’t exist in US products (KDE is German) If not, dont use a smartphone and use an old Nokia 3300.

A community project which can get infiltrated especially positioned as secured/privacy oriented device. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not bashing or trying diminishing a FOSS but we should really strive to demonstrate our claims and as someone who built its own lineage image 2 years ago, I would not blindly sign repeat the slogan.

And yeah, I used a Nokia 220 for a while during 2021. Actually, I use my iPhone (refurbished) - beside call/IM of course - just as an expensive 2FA device my the bank/administration/customers.

I do not recommend anyone, regardless of the OS, to use the smartphone for official procedures, like bamking, no smartphone is a secure device, much less so than a PC, where you have many more protection options available.

Listen pal, I am not an apple fanboy, clearly not. I just use it as a blackbox, i don’t fiddle with, support is 5y+ , i don’t play, don’t do network stuff and UX is just straight to the point, sure there are annoying stuff and artificial limitations but at the end, it prevent me to waste time on my phone.

sure Apple is spying but compared to Google, MS or leaving unknown nerds from LineageOS snooping in the back, I am fine with it.

I use it within the legal scope and with limited apps, if something bad happens - fishing or other - at least, I could raise a case.

“Manufacturers”… They all standardized already on USB-C except Apple.

Wish they’d settle on an open standard and not USB though, which is proprietary. They’re effectively funneling money into the USB organization and giving them an absolute monopoly.

Usb-c is the most perfect connector for pretty mucheverything, even if it took the USB consortium 15 years to finally make a non frustrating connector socket.

seems to me that the female USB-C is the most fragile.

for me, the perfect one is the lightning connector from a practical/mechanical standpoint, fix the corrosion issue and make it a standard.

I wish there were a standard which defined these kind of stuff
