petitioning for a fucking emoji epitomizes the criticism that social media is a vehicle for diverting action into impotent dialogue.
retributive violence against individual actors is not the same as dismantling oppressive systems, and should not eclipse the important work of creating resilient communities and networks of mutual aid to replace those heirarchies.
I think you took the joke a bit too seriously
Edit: oh wait wtf I didn’t notice the post body. I agree with you then lol
I just wanna conspire with comrades using pretty little pictures.
You mean like when the emoji for gun went from something realistic to a squirt gun?
Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.
Sad guillotine noises
Let’s make the guillotine happy again?
Emoji are a new form of language and language dictates thought
Yes, but there’s something to be said about the ouroboros of thought that social media produces.
It’s funny how reverting to pictograms is being construed as “new”.
retributive violence against individual actors is not the same as dismantling oppressive systems
My problem is that I only understand one of those things. The other is meaningless hot air, spewed exclusively by intellectual elites who may or may not have any idea of what that is even supposed to mean.
work of creating resilient communities and networks of mutual aid to replace those heirarchies.
And that explanation doesn’t tell me anything either. Put up a guillotine. Put the man in. Let the blade fall. I understand that. Create a network of mutual aid to replace hierarchies? Never saw that happen. Never learned about that, or how that is supposed to work. Don’t know what that is supposed to mean, or how that is supposed to play out.
If you assume anyone knows about any of that, and if you assume that anyone can imagine anything concrete about that, you are out of touch. You are communicating ineffectively. At least to me. And probably to most other people as well.
The effect of examples is not to underestimate. That’s how they keep workers in check, and that’s how guillotining a king got 2 centuries of democracy.
incredibly simplistic perspective, and intellectually dishonest; we traded monarchy for a dictatorship of the capital owning class.
Yes, and it was a big paradigm shift, from blood linage to money linage.
what is generational wealth?
Bitching about someone else’s efforts is just bitching.
You offer to no alternative effort.
If this wasn’t social media, you’d not be saying this for fear of a swift ass whooping.
thank goodness internet tough guys exist to defend limp-dick slacktivism.

Did you just call my
sincere effort to get an international movement for the recognition of the guillotine emoji goingshitpost “limp-dick slacktivism”?I’ll have you know I am so anti work I am currently not even employed.
Here’s my alternative effort: I joined the SSBN force to get a front row seat to the end of the world. Gimme a valid and authentic EAM and I’ll flip that switch like there’s no tomorrow, 'cause there won’t be.
Did…did he just invent the vacation?
Next up “I’m a CEO who gets hungry in the middle of the day, so I had a sandwich and some chips and found my creative spark.”
more like I had some avocado toast in a nice cafe with my latte. Ah yes, the creative spark.
I had some avocado toast 5 years ago and now I can’t buy a house :(
Same. I bought a $9 coffee and now I’ll never be able to retire.
I had some avocado toast in the house that I own…
These are CEOs, it’s more like, “had my personal chef whip me up an avocado toast reduction over toast made from avocado while flying to the coast for the third time this week and found my creative spark.”
dammit “Flying to the coast for a third time” got me
Nope, footballer Gary Neville beat him to it a few months ago!
That’s amazing.
I remember watching this on Have I Got News For You.
I don’t know why I watch it, I’m not even from that continent.
The message is good. We need 30 days vacation.
A continuous 30 day vacation is only 20 working days or so. In my country that’s the government mandated minimum.
I think 25 or 30 workday paid vacation mandate is better for your mental health and productivity.
I actually get “unlimited” paid vacation days, which sounds like a bit of a shady practice. But I’ve already taken 30 days this year and I get absolutely no complaints. I’m planning on taking at least one more week this year.
I can’t imagine not having any vacation days. America sounds nice and all if you’re making 150k+ but I’d hate to work there at median income.
A gigantic portion of our population makes 50-60k each so household income looks like 100k+ until you look and see that there are plenty of perpetually single people like myself “stuck” only making 60k with 10 vacation days.
2/10 would not recommend.
We get 15 working days vacation here. It’s shit. I used them all in May and now I gotta hold out until next fiscal.
America is a big place with lots of different employers so your statement really isn’t valid. Plenty of people get a decent amount of vacation even at lower wages. Certainly not enough which is why we need to keep fighting for worker rights. Sorry but statements like yours really make my ass itch because you’re using our suffering to prop yourself up when I’m sure you’ve got plenty of problems in your own country that you remain apathetic and inactive about every day. You’ll probably want to reply that you’re just trying to show some kind of sympathy but that’s not ever what it comes across as when anyone tries to speak about the lives of people living in a different country.
Things will never improve if we don’t point to something better and aspire to it.
It’s why Canada sucks so much. Every time one of our problems is being talked about, everyone compares ourselves to the US and shrugs. When you point to something better it’s unattainable, but at least we’re not as bad as america!! We’re a country of apathy.
What’s the point of this whole platform if we’re not exchanging experiences?
I know there there was a feeling by some back on Reddit that Europeans like pissing on the US without self-reflection. Maybe that is partly true, but you also don’t read any of the self-reflections because chances they are in our native languages.
But for me personally I have considered moving to the US as a skilled worker, which if possible is a privileged position to begin with. I’m in a field that pays much better in the US so I am still envious of colleagues in the US making 1.5 to 2 times what I do. But I just don’t love my job. I’m pretty good at parts of it, but I hate (read: am bad at) some other necessary parts of my job. So in the end my career options are somewhat limited. So yeah, there is probably a degree of cognitive dissonance involved.
Here is a list of things wrong with the Netherlands, just to balance shit
- Dutch childcare benefits scandal: Government falsely accused vulnerable citizens of fraud, leading to children being placed out of the house, bankruptcies, and even suicides
- Youth minimum wage (though being phased out)
- Labour exploitation through flexible contracts
- Terrible working and housing conditions for foreign slaughterhouse workers
- Nitrogen crisis
- Housing crisis, partly because of demographic developments (fewer people per house, slight growth through immigration) but now also because of the nitrogen crisis
- The government basically forced hundreds of asylum seekers to sleep outside last summer because of budget cuts which are probably popular with a certain constituency
- Earthquakes crisis in Groningen because of natural gas extraction, with a government turning a blind eye to people who saw the value of their houses tank because of structural damage
And that’s before you get to all the things you could say for any developed western capitalist nation.

You need more, mate.
At 42 days here. We can spread them out over the year
IMO much better than workaholic executives who use their own unhealthy lifestyle as justification to inflict it on others.
30 day vacations for all.
Should be 4 day work week and 6 weeks vacation. There is absolutely no need to work this much. So many bullshit jobs, just to keep people employed and busy all their lives.
Not just employed but underemployed. Forty hours a week for not-40 hours worth of money. We call it a grind because it’s designed to wear us down to bare subsistence.
Sure, that gets you the time off, but this guy flew to Paris and hung out for that entire time and found his “creative spark”. We also need like 50% higher wages so we’re not sitting in a Parisian cafe thinking “oh fuck this vacation is going to bankrupt me” or stuck at home unable to afford the flight to begin with.
Laughs in german labor laws.
We only have 6 weeks in Denmark!
Technically four weeks aren’t 30 days.
With 20 workdays off you can go in vacation for a month. At most companies you have more than 20 days even.
Most companies in the US will not be okay with you walking off for a month in a row though.
You’re right, I forgot that after the 28days there’s another weekend. But as someone who did a lot of union work in Germany I can assure you that a lot of companies do not give more than the mandatory 20d for a 5d-week.
Seriously… I literally just opened up lemmy after checking my vacation balance to see this lol Took 5 years to get 10 days vacation at my current job and I’ve used them all already… boooo
I will never understand how American culture has considered that acceptable.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_minimum_annual_leave_by_country
Mostly because American culture is “I got mine, fuck you.”
A culture brainwashed to glorify “rugged individualism” is a culture of self centered inconsiderate assholes.
There was very successful vilification of unions from my understanding as well. I find the discussion about unions with Americans really interesting as from my Finnish perspective they are the cornerstone of workers’ rights.
Well something like 10 percent of us are still unionized. I’m technically in management, but I’m still a union member and I 100 percent support my union brothers and sisters over ownership. That said, having a unionized workforce is actually good for my company’s owners because it allows them to bid on highly lucrative projects that aren’t really viable for non-signatory contractors for technical reasons having to do with safety and insurance.

4 weeks/year is standard isn’t it?
Lmao not even close. Canada is just 10 days. Afaik USA it can be litterally 0
Here it’s 25 days minimum by law, and you are entitled to use 20 of them consecutively if you want to. If you have a good job it’s often closer to 30 days.
My work you get one week the first year. Two weeks for each of the following 6 years, three weeks the 7 years after that, then finally 4 weeks once you have been with the company for 15 years.
If you don’t work for any 30 day period, you are let go and if you work for the company again I’m the future, you restart the benefits back at 1 week vacation.
It’s actually one of the best around. I just hit 15 years and get 4 weeks now. Yay America.
Oh I should mention they now “expect more” out of a 15 year employee so now my evaluations are almost always “barely acceptable”, despite going above and beyond always. They want us to feel like we are lucky to have the job and they could fire us at any time. It gets worse the more benefits they are paying.
I was going to make fun of you for being American, but then I realised that’s like punching an abused puppy.
RIP my dude, hopefully one day you guys can join the modern world.
My current job gives everyone 16 days a year. I love my job, the dynamic, the people, the product. But I won’t last 2 years max with only 16 days off a year.
I get a week or I can take the check and keep working.
Guess what I end up doing?
I delay the end of year misery for an extra week. That’s what I do.
The trick is to be paid enough that you don’t need to cash in your annual leave.
Ah, fellow European
Kiwi.
“What if I pay my workers even less…” 🤔
Source??
Or is this just rage bait
Engagement is engagement, whether people are engaged through anger or love.
Engagement is the only metric these types of media sources care about.
Source not for consumption but as proof that it’s not just a bs screenshot for rage bait to push their link
Hey, I sincerely wanted to post this with just a guillotine emoji in the title, didn’t have one, went on a Google hike, found the petition and then mixed until smooth and had this beautiful post.
The screenshot itself is just something I found in my meme/shitpost folder on my phone. I try to post something on Lemmy everyday to keep those user numbers up.
And now I’m gonna pin a medal I just cut out of a cereal box to my own chest because you’re welcome.
No source :(
scrub the influencer brainworms from your gray matter for one moment and produce a critical thought–
engagement with what, exactly?
the signal which carries no message is white noise.
meaningless engagement is distraction, wasted bandwidth.
an emoji is not a meaningful improvement to the material condition of the working class, or a threat to the status quo. It’s not even relevant to the abolition of work.
You’re responding as if they’ve expressed any sort of opinion on that but it’s just facts. It’s just a fact of the state of “journalism” and how online content works now. Higher engagement means more reach, it’s just SEO/marketing shit. These companies aren’t doing it for the betterment of society.
Found a source from Business Insider: https://www.businessinsider.nl/im-a-ceo-who-was-burned-out-so-i-took-30-days-off-from-work-to-recharge-in-paris-and-found-my-creative-spark/
Still could be a rage bait article though.
Business insider is based in the Netherlands???
I’m assuming that is just their Dutch site. Kind of like bbc.com
Ah great point!
Oh boo fucking hoo. I have zero empathy for these fucks making millions every year and grinding wage slaves into dust.
This guy could be anybody in the EU
I mean… I came here to say that you can go after the guy for being a CEO, but taking a month off is not particularly controversial over here. If anything, when I talk to a US business owner, which I sometimes do, hearing about how they are constantly working is normally more of a red flag than the opposite.
Even here in the EU not everyone gets a month off.
Of those who do, not all can take a month as a continuous vacation.
Of those who do, not all can afford to go to Paris.
Of those who do, not all can afford to stay in Paris for a month.
It’s about the nonchalance these CEOs spew their shit with.
UK here (so not EU but this isn’t something that’s changed since we were) that’s not really true, most companies would raise an eyebrow if you want to take that much of your holiday in one go. Plus it would leave you working like an American for the rest of the year.
Really? So you’re offering to pay for my trip there, did I get that right?
wat
Anybody in the EU is rich when a lot of people can’t really afford to eat out once a month since they get paid barely above the absolute minimum to maintain a living while in Germany for example 2 families own more than half the population combined. Only because Paris is near and we get paid vacation doesn’t mean we actually have more money to enjoy life per se. And Paris is expensive.
I’d settle for a Trebuchet emoji, because I’m fine with flinging billionaires across the landscape at high speeds.
Honestly, a lot more fun than a guillotine, imho. Think about the ragdolling as they tumble in the air.
EDIT: Also, the longer the hangtime, the longer they have to think about the decisions that led them to people wanting to fling their body a few miles with a trebuchet. No forced self reflection with a guillotine.
eat the richfling the rich at high velocitiesNot quite as catchy, but that does sound amusing!
I doubt they’d spend the hangtime thinking about their transgressions.
It would more useful for other billionaires to see the hangtime and imagining that, as a deterrent.
Yes this is a completely pedantic comment
We all need a little pedantry sometimes.
I’m imagining an event like the old school Punkin Chunkin, where people build elaborate devices to try and fling a pumpkin as far and as accurately as possible. Call it The Billionaire Fling and wherever the billionaires land is where they get buried.
Have amusement rides, bounce houses, fair food, etc, and donate all proceeds to food banks and homeless shelters.
Call it Yeet the Elite
Yes yes yes please let’s normalize this
That’s so much better, and I’m upset that I didn’t think of it myself.
Fucking love it.
You aren’t responsible for random “Dingus” stickers all over SLC and PDX are you🤨🧐
no, that’s some other dingus.
(͡•_ ͡• )
I had such high hopes of solving the mystery finally hahaha. Cool username none the less!
While fun to think about, they probably end up at least knocked out if not dead before they even get released.
Surely there’s a fine tuning that maximises air time while not rendering them unconscious for the trip.
Fuck emoji, we need guillotines.
Rage bait, moving on.
People on LinkedIn be like…
Oh god I have so many screenshots of peoples LinkedIn posts that are so detached from reality. Unfortunately most of them are in German.
Please post them! My German could use some work anyway.
please post
You can post them on the community LinkedInLunatics@sh.itjust.works
Post them on !ich_iel@feddit.de
No guillotine; but we do have a sword.
🗡️
And we have a bow 🏹
And my 🪓!
And your brother! 👦
And your mom
The CEO’s who are making millions of dollars? I don’t think really do anything, so if they just didn’t show up to work for a month would it even be that noticeable?
You’d see a noticable uptick in productivity without their meddling.
Must be nice
