Who are you quoting, and why do they think “paywall” means you have to make a free account?

Putting quotes around the wrong word doesn’t make it the right word.

OP could mean whenever they want. Most people understood what OP meant. I was just making a point that data is often an overlooked currency.
Also aren’t you also being pedant by explaining OP didn’t use the correct vernacular?

A pedant is excessively concerned with trivial details. Saying that you have to pay money to access a site when you don’t is not a trivial detail, it’s straight up misinformation. Do I have to explain why misinformation is a bad thing?

Yes, they meant “Twitter is putting up barriers to browsing content.” Even if paywall wasn’t the right word, their intent was clear. Not sure why we feel the need to dive into whether they used the right word when the issue is Twitter (and Meta) attempting to seal off their users’ content behind a login. Most everyone seems to have understood them.

What the fuck kind of question is that? It’s misinformation. It’s misleading, because it makes a claim that is patently untrue. It makes an outright accusation that is demonstrably false. It’s not ambiguous, it’s not “close enough,” it’s simply incorrect. There is no reason to call it something that it isn’t, and every reason not to make some asinine false accusation.

Why are you up my fucking ass about it anyway? I called someone out for saying something that ISN’T TRUE, I must be a real piece of shit, right? Don’t worry, next time I read some misleading ass shit I’ll just go fuck myself instead of saying anything.

Did you misunderstand what they meant in the context of the post? No? Then there was no reason to have a multi-day meltdown because OP misunderstood what a word meant.

Yes, it kinda does. Context means things. When you put quotes around a singular word in this manner, you are signaling the reader that you don’t have the proper words, so you are using this one as the concept is similar. The quotes take the place of inflection that cannot be communicated via text. In this context, “paywalled” means “hoops must be jumped through to access the site.”

There is a lot more to communication than dictionary definitions.

It’s bizarre to me that people will lose their goddamn shit over a misleading or just bad title when it’s an article, but when it’s a text post you’re a dick for pointing it out. Which is it? Do we give a fuck about accurate headlines or not?

“Paywall” means something. Twitter is not paywalled. There’s no reason to be a shit about it, I’m not attacking you, it’s just a misleading headline.

Who’s really “being a shit” here? I see nobody else being hostile but you. Accusing people of that which you are doing yourself is called “projection”.

Nobody else is pedantically picking apart silly things like wording and terminology and then lashing out at others. Just you. We all knew what he meant. Were you ever told as a kid to “pick your battles”? Do you know what that means? Not everything deserves a response.

What’s the matter, did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning and decide to take it out on the world? Significant other break up with you or cheat on you? Got fired? Did your pet die? Why are you so angry at the world? What did it ever do to you? None of those things (whichever is applicable) is our problem.

Please, let’s leave those kinds of toxic, hostile behaviors on the dead bird site and reddit where they belong. We’re trying to build something new here.

Otherwise, “play stupid games, win stupid prizes” and people are just going to report you for repeated incivility and offensive language.

EDIT: And your reply has been reported too. Since all you know is how to behave like a child, maybe we should all treat you like one.

Quotes are often used around a word when it’s similar enough to another word to be understood.

Paywalled means you must have an account and pay in order to view an article.

There is no equivalent word that comes to mind for this, but “paywalled” is so close as to be misunderstood only if you’re trying to do so – you must now have an account and login in order to view what’s behind the login wall.

People who think paywall is synonymous with sign-in or account required probably spell “should have” with an “of.”

The good ol’ loginwall that social media sites have been moving to for a few years. Meta is also guilty of this… making it almost impossible to check out anything without a login.

Just a reminder that nitter exists, which lets you browse twitter without needing an account, from a minimal ui and having everything proxied through the instance of choice for privacy. You can use the libredirect firefox addon to automatically redirect twitter (& optionally other services like youtube/reddit, etc to its frontend like nitter).

You can view a list of instances here.

It’s frustrating, but I’m betting it won’t last. With all the people who only visit twitter via links from other sites (or those embedded tweets in news articles), doing something like this will cause twitter’s page traffic to suddenly implode. Which will cause their advertisement impression statistics to implode. Which will make their paying advertisers explode. And then twitter will roll it back.

Unless, of course, Elongated Muskrat is intentionally and purposefully trying to completely remove twitter from existence. In which case, this is a pretty clever move.

trying to completely remove twitter from existence

I expect that Twitter just wants people to install the Twitter app and get Twitter accounts.

I suppose that Reddit could do the same thing as well.

@stux As I said on Mastodon: it probably is another “bug” that plagues Twitter since… “this guy” put his hands on it. It could be fixed soon because of the ruckus it will certainly make.

For now, you can still use Nitter instead.

I’m now expecting Elon Jr. (Spaz) to do the same on Reddit because Elon is his idol and mentor.

I wish there was an option on #DuckDuckGo to exclude search results that point to Twitter since I can no longer read them. It’s now just clutter in the search results.

Turning the internet into walled gardens was always their plan. Kill everything open and free, force everyone into their controlled spaces, then flood them with ads and noise. That was the plan from day one.

It’s really sad. They NEVER would have gotten anywhere if the internet was what they want it to be. Had the internet started as a bunch of closed spaces, the early sites would have monopolies on communication and we wouldn’t have had near as incredible a tech explosion as we had. Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, none of them would have existed.

The era of open internet is coming to a close, unless the people choose to force it open.
