If you want a more modern software with the Winamp feel, the Audacious player supports Winamp skins.

The bar to create a new one was so low that anyone could do it. I think that contributed to people’s affinity to it.

Foobar2000 has been working on Linux compatibility, mostly using Wine. At least if you’re after Milkdrop visualization compatibility.

Same, actually. I don’t remember much of the deal with it but it’s one of many installers in the repository from the Before Times.

At some point, though I recall they were trying to have a formal release that wasn’t just the windows version on wine.

I absolutely love Foobar2000, and one of the biggest reasons is the plugins that allow it to play lots of different chiptune formats. Also I love that its UI is practical and doesn’t get in my way.

I always preferred NAD as an mp3 player. I loved the see through hole in the default skin.

Plus the dev would get stoned out of his gourd on mushrooms and it helped him create a very efficient mp3 decoder. It always has a lower CPU usage than anything else out there, and imo sounded crisper.

For me it’s just too tiny and there is no way to scale it without it becoming a blurry mess on Windows.

That and the lack of FLAC support.

I just use foobar2000 now when I’m on Windows

Interesting I remember using it for flac back in the day, but I did have to add some plugins for various codecs and whatnot so maybe I added it at the time. Was probably 2.95 version or older though.

Surprised there isn’t a larger format skin that you could find, but then it be old now and lost to antiquity

I forgot the days of codec hunting. I recall downloading the second season of Blueseed and the audio was all in Ogg Vorbis. Someone else was using the phone line so I was SOL until they were done.

Before you start posting and interacting, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with general community guidelines to ensure a positive and enjoyable experience for everyone.

  1. Follow the Lemmy Rules: The Lemmy rules apply in addition to our community specific guidelines. See link or image below:

  2. Self-Promotion Guidelines: Self-promotion is welcome, but within reason. Multiple posts are allowed since we are just starting out, but keep it interesting and unique!

  3. Sourcing and Credit: Please provide proper credit and sources for any music/videos you post if possible. It isn’t necessarily required to post here, but it definitely helps people find songs that may be hard to search up.

  4. Discussion and Critique: Engage in meaningful discussions and critique, but keep it constructive. Use common sense!

  5. NSFW Content: Pornography is not allowed. Keep in mind there are some ballsy users who may browse Lemmy in public spaces without NSFW filters. Try to label and tag NSFW content appropriately and avoid explicit or overly offensive material.

  6. Sensible Titles: Use coherent and descriptive titles for your posts when possible. Since vaporwave has many stylized fonts and text, we are pretty relaxed about this. Just don’t add things such as links/adverts in the title.

  7. Relevant Content Only: This should be obvious, but please avoid posts that are unrelated to vaporwave. We really don’t want to remove posts unless it’s something like spam.

  8. Have Fun! Federated sites have much more freedom for users. You should be able to post without worrying about it being removed immediately over thousands of arbitrary rules. We want users to feel at home! Memes about vaporwave are allowed.

We are still new like most people that are migrating from Reddit. There’s going to be some growing pains along the way and it’s also going to take time for everyone to get used to things. Be patient!
