“The initiative helped change the ratio of shells exchanged between Ukraine and Russia from 1:10 to 1:2.”
Drones have radically changed warfare, but if you want to know why the power balance between russian and Ukraine has shifted so much in favor of Ukraine… it comes down to industrial factors like how many artillery shells Ukraine has vs. russia.
Drones don’t replace artillery, they form a mutually beneficial relationship with it.
I don’t understand at all why this initiative has to be dependent on Czech politics. The EU should take it over .
A combination of elements of rightwing groups in Europe wanting not to help Ukraine too much and indeed to make political hay out of pre-existing aid structures to Ukraine being too costly… and the fact that much of Europe is convinced that drones make artillery obsolete and there is a general cultural lack of seriousness around producing a decisive amount of artillery ammunition that pervades still. The US was stuck in this mindset too, and production is only beginning to ramp up.
If you show someone an article about a new expensive drone technology they are far more likely to believe it is a decisive use of money than when they see an article about a Bohdana or Caesar artillery truck that doesn’t look futuristic at all and cost millions of dollars. There is a dangerous lack of understanding of pretty basic military realities in the general public and international community right now and history has shown that kind of armchair hubris leads to disaster and massive unnecessary loss of life in war.
