Apple is a dongle manufacturer, but they also sell devices you can stick your dongle into.

My first apple product was a PowerBook (the first aluminum one after the titanium laptop).

It came with a DVI/VGA dongle and had FireWire 800, 400, Ethernet, 56k modem, a bunch of USB ports, headphone and mic jacks, a DVI port, and even cardbus slot.

I only ever really used the DVI, FireWire, USB and headphone ports though. And the separate mic port was actually a pain in the ass.

I personally kinda sympathised with their holding onto ports for a while just because I’d heard a number of older apple customers getting rather upset any time ports changed and they needed new adapters and cables, which as a user I can understand. Apple moved to USB-C on their laptops but their iphone customers are larger and less tech savvy, so I always figured there was actually a kernel of just trying to keep their customers happy behind keeping lightning.

In many other products USB c was the standard for a lot of years. So most people already have USB c cables. This decision has nothing to do with the customers.

You just proved why it’s a stupid idea to not switch to type C on the iPhone.

Their mac and iPads already switched years ago. Now Apple users needed to carry a second charger just for their iPhone if they wanted to charge it. What a ridiculous thing. They should’ve switched to type C all at once.

Not to mention pretty much every single tech product for nearly the last decade comes with type C. So I’m sure Apple users have a handful of cables already.

Nintendo switch, GoPros, battery banks, Android phones, headphones… pretty much everything.

I think moving to USB-C was the right move, but when I upgrade eventually, I will have to buy a bunch of new cables and power bricks too, so it’s a hidden cost. Admittedly, if you know where to go, that cost is minimal, but it is still there and it is also something I have to prepare for ahead of time. I have, in regular use, 5 cables right now, 3 of them in bricks. All 5 cables and all 3 bricks would need to be replaced.

I admit I could probably do all of that for $20-$30, but it’s still annoying.

Nobody is stopping Apple from adding 2 ports, nobody will be complaining then.

Except Apple, because they can’t peddle their overpriced dongles.

I feel like no one actually needs/wants this adapter, but Apple couldn’t just not make one. So it’s probably priced that way because they don’t expect to sell many at all.

This is more for accessories with lightning connectors.

That said probably cheaper adapters will appear or maybe already exist 🤔.

MUCH cheaper adapters do exist. Some of them may or may not burst into flames, YMMV.

$30 is likely overpriced, but $2 is going to be way underpriced for what should be a smart adapter with some safety circuit inside… and gold plated copper connectors, not just copper plated aluminum… so pick wisely.

It’s the stupid tax/desperation tax. Either you are so stupid you’d buy an adapter for your cable that’s more expensive than a new cable or you are so desperate because a vital accessory has lightning built in and won’t work without a dongle

This is the answer. It is expensive because it will be a low demand item. Most people will never need this, so it is a specialty item that is taking up valuable shelf space.

All the conspiracy theories in this thread are just the standard “whaa, they changed something” whining.

This has a different purpose. It’s if you want to connect your iPhone to a 2008 car that still has a 30pin port (that you adapted to lightning) or a 2013 base model that only has lightning for example. For specialty accessories basically

The industrial design teams spent months streamining the design and making all the angles complement each other so the design is simple, yet not too busy, while still providing 35% of the capability of our competition.

By sane standards, yes. By apple standards nope totally normal. I’d love to know how many billions they’ve made on cables and dongles which were only necessary because of intentional decisions they made. I probably would vomit though.

Also would be curious, how many people suffered or died due to not being able to charge their phone where a standard charger was available or vice versa for Android users?

I’ve been scoffed at for this idea before, but interoperability is extremely important, especially when you are talking about a major piece of society’s infrastructure. And phones ARE that. It’s hard to know the downstream effects of shit like this. All we know is that at best, millions of times people have had this conversation, needlessly as fuck:

“hey do you have a phone charger? I need a lightning cable.” “No I only have usb-c” (or vice versa)

The best outcome you can hope for is having to think about this and be annoyed several times in your life. For years I refused to buy lightning cables but due to several factors I have ended up needing to buy like 7 lightning cables despite never buying a single apple product that requires one.

And no, apple simps, I give not one shred of a fuck about your apple apologias, fuck off with them. Micro USB was better in the same way a qwerty keyboard is better. technically it’s inferior, but that doesn’t matter AT ALL, because 1) it’s a standard, and 2) it works.

If I were to agree on phones being infrastructure, which I may, I’d put the onus of standardization on regulators, not the for profit company.
