The thin blue line flag is the equivalent of a gang color. Some say they are the biggest gang in the US.

(It’s one of those pro-cop flags, in case anyone can’t tell)

I hate how combative polarization has gotten in the US. They clearly don’t want a pride flag there. Does the person seriously think that pissing them off will make them more tolerant of the LGBT community? This will only escalate the mutual hatred

You’re victim blaming. Literally saying it’s the fault of the lgbt that they’re not liked, and putting the onus on the lgbt for that person’s intolerance and lack of education. Why is it my job to educate and fix these bigots?

I apologize, yes I can now see how this was victim blaming. Firstly I should say that I’m an outsider to US politics so I’m still trying to get to grips on what exactly is going on.

Do I understand the following correctly? The conservatives obviously made the first act of aggression by jeopardising the LGBT community’s rights. This means that any subsequent counterattacks made by the LGBT community will purely be in an effort to defend themselves, ie. to incapacitate them from further jeopardising their rights. What I fail to see is how defacing their symbol will achieve that. In the worst(?) case, it provokes them, in the best case they end up surrounded by fewer blue line flags but still an equally threatening group of conservatives. I understand that the person may have done it out of pure frustration, to feel revenge, but in that case touching somebody else’s stuff is hardly morally justifiable if it’s not a means to a greater end.

Sorry if it appears that I’m being ignorant, I’m just trying to gain an insight into what’s going on here by getting it wrong and getting corrected.

Thin blue line flag != intolerance.

Some people who use it are bigots, yes. But the only ‘victim’ in this specific situation is the person whose car was vandalized.

Thin blue line flag != intolerance.

That’s just false. The thin blue line is by definition a tribal mind set. It’s all about the in-group vs. the out-group and demonizing that out-group. All of which is the beating heart of intolerance.

Guess I’ve upset the bootlickers that haven’t figured out the difference between describing intolerance and being intolerant.

Aaaand with this post, you are totally not following that tribal mindset yourself? You are doing the exact same thing

Exactly. But in their mindset, it’s OK to do so because ‘ACAB’ and other bullshit generalizations, exactly the thing they call out when applied to their favorite groups.

While I agree about polarization, and I don’t think it’s even necessary to circle out the US because it’s spread pretty much everywhere now: the same reason (though I suspect this is more just a funny jokememe) that people fuck with nazi swastikas etc. Sure it probably won’t change much, but it gives people on the opposite side relief and comfort and support.

You could say the same about pride parades, pride flags, gender pronouns etc etc etc depending on where you’re standing at. Doesn’t make flying a pride flag, even if all it does is purposefully piss someone’s asshole neighbours off, or even if the sole purpose, any less proper.

And for a simpler reason - they do it too and people are simple. There’s no context in this picture, but the types who would proudly don a blue lives flag (especially considering context) or whatever conservative symbol, seem more prone to harassing (to say the least) the kind of people who would helpfully color their pride flag in for them.

True, if they were personally harassed by the person with this flag then that completely changes the situation

Wh… that’s not at all the point I’m making at all, but sure. I’m gonna end this here.

E: Fuck it, just a small one. Since it’s not about individuals, and one sides politics involves stomping on the other one’s rights to just fucking exist, it’s not like it’s a wholly disproportionate response to color in a flag (that shouldn’t get a mature, developed human adult over the edge) to support the basic human rights and the right to exist for a minority of a population in protest when the other side tries to deny those rights and outright try to shoot you or some shit.

I kinda want to downvote you, but you’re partially right, making them angry may cause even more problems, but staying silent sure isn’t the solution.

That’s true. I realized that this is in a kind of grey area between applying collective guilt and individual guilt, which is what makes the ethics of this so contentious. Oh whoops I actually didn’t realize that’s the community this was in
