Alright, it has been about a week since I posted the survey to learn a little bit more about who is posting here. I’ll post the full results at the bottom if anybody wants to see them but I’ll start by talking a bit about what I found.

Total Responses

Counting myself, we had 22 responses. I know not everybody responds to this sort of thing so I’m actually pretty pleased, I honestly expected to only get 10 or so responses. I don’t know if this means the community is just very willing to participate on average, or if we have more people stopping in than I expected but either way is great.

Where Are We From

Considering we are an English speaking community, posting about an art form started in the US, it is probably un-surprising that we are mostly based in the USA. That said, there was more international representation than I expected. Overall we had 13 from the USA, 3 from Canada and 6 from Europe. Our EU delegation had 2 from the UK, 1 from Austria, 1 from Lithuania, 1 from Belgian and 1 from The Netherlands, which is neat.

One person did skip this question, but we still ended up with 22 responses as one person identified from the US and Canada.

How Old Are We and How Long Have We Listened To Hip Hop

Again, this one may not be surprising but we are on the older side for any internet based community I think, though maybe not for Lemmy/Kbin specifically, with ages 25-34 making up the biggest chunk, with 14 of the 22 responses. I do want to shout out our senior members, with 3 people reporting themselves aged between 45-54.

As for how long we have been listening to Hip Hop, >20 years made up 10/22 responses, the biggest chunk. Next was 16-20 years, with 5/22 responses (including myself). This makes sense given that we trend a little older. Again, I want to do a special shout out but in the opposite direction. 1 person responded that they have been listening to Hip Hop for <1 year! I think it is great to have people newer to the medium in the community and I hope to see them posting what they like, as I know a group of old heads can get a little insular.

Favorite Music Inside and Outside of Hip Hop

Starting with everybody’s favorite sub-genres of Hip Hop, we are kind of all over the place. Conscious Hip Hop came in on top with 9 votes, but Gangsta Rap and “A little bit of everything” both had 8 responses and Trap came in at 7. One person even selected None, which I don’t know what that means. The only options which had nobody select them were Crunk, Horrorcore, Latin Hip Hop and New Jack Swing. Due to us averaging a little older and from the US/EU, most of this doesn’t surprise me. The exception being New Jack Swing having no votes, but I suspect that is because it is more Hip Hop adjacent, moving towards R&B really, than actual Hip Hop. That said, I leave you with TLC - Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg and Montel Jordan - This Is How We Do It, for two of my favorite New Jack songs which err towards Hip Hop.

Outside of Hip Hop we were equally varied, though Electronic had 11 votes, making it the most popular genre here outside of Hip Hop. Rock and Metal came in tied at 2nd with 8 votes respectiely and R&B came in with 7 votes. This question had the most use of the Other option too, with people adding in Hyperpop, Alternative, Drum and Bass, Ska Punk, Punk, EDM, Synthpop and Reggae/Island Reggae. When I was making the survey I had wanted to avoid getting too specific on the options I gave, but I am glad that people shared their more specific music tastes! The only responses that got 0 votes were Country and International. Special shout out to the 3 people besides myself who said they like Folk. I’m a huge fan of Folk and Folk Punk myself, but it rarely crosses with Hip Hop. Glad to see some others!

I also just noticed when writing this post I worded this question dumb. My bad.

How Do We Find New Hip Hop

I wish I had made this question more specific, as I really need better ways to find new Hip Hop. The most popular answer was Spotify (or equivilent) for finding new Hip Hop, with 8/22 responses. This isn’t super surprising as I fall in this category as well. Other than that responses were pretty all over the place, with only Youtube having more than 1 response. Since I’ve been doing shout outs, whoever put “New? Lol” made me laugh.

Favorite Hip Hop Artist/Group

This question is such a clusterfuck of data. Looking over it all, I’ll just list the artists/groups with more than 1 selection here.

6 Kendrick Lamar

4 Wu Tang Clan

4 MF DOOM

3 Kanye

2 A Tribe Called Quest

2 Freddie Gibbs

Freddie was the only one I was a little surprised to see there, as I don’t think of him as super popular, but he beat out common favorites such as Lil Wayne and Jay Z. I suspect this is due to a compibination of our small sample size and the demographics of our group. Worth mentioning I feel, 2 people left this completely blank and 1 person put None. I filled this in myself and personally had a REALLY hard time limiting down to 3 artists so I identify with these people strongly.

Raw Data

Below is the link to the raw data in Spreadsheet form. I shuffled the answers so they are NOT in the order they were received in.

Have also created a summarized, easier to read version which I have put in a Google Doc, for lack of an easier way to share
