A reddit user posted screenshots of a gas giant that were beautifully adorned with the colors of the trans flag.
This attracted bigots with their agenda to disrupt the community discussion and the mods shut it down by locking the post.
So the poster created a second one with more photos as a symbolic gesture that the message was simply about pretty planets that they felt represented them-
It too, was locked.
I made a post there proclaiming that I am leaving until I see the mods replaced with those that will not give in to bigotry, and I linked to this community with the hope that people can find a new home here.
Sooooo… welcome new friends!
the nomanshigh subreddit is the true space for No Man’s Sky fandom. Suggest that user post there, they will get a much better reaction
I quit reddit but not the nipnip grah!
Is it possible they just don’t feel like dealing with and interacting with the hate? The mods are modding a game subreddit they aren’t making a space where they should be expected to engage in culture wars. It’s depressing having to interact with a ton of hate.
Im bi and I wouldn’t want to deal with people engaging in hateful discussions about bisexual erasure on a subreddit that has nothing to do with sexuality or social issues. That isn’t the space for it.
Not feeling like dealing with it is just being bigoted out of fear of bigots. It doesn’t change anything. Cowardice isn’t an excuse.
Are they obligated to deal with hate when what they signed on for was moderating a subreddit about a video game?
Why are you deciding that someone else must take part in your desire to fight about things unrelated to the subject of the subreddit? Why do you feel entitled to their time and their mental energy like that?
Yes, if you sign up to be a mod, you are signing up to moderate. That includes dealing with whatever hate falls into your community.
The fuck is wrong with you? Oh, the poor little moderators have to do what the name of their positions fucking implies they should be doing? How dare we feel entitled to demand those who volunteered to do a job actually do their job?!
If you’re too much of a coward to acknowledge or deal with hate or drama when it shows up, then you shouldn’t be a fucking mod.
Yes, if you sign up to be a mod, you are signing up to moderate. That includes dealing with whatever hate falls into your community.
Just keep in mind that “dealing” can also mean “nuke everything off topic”.
Im surprised that people don’t get this. If the post has nothing to do with the game and it is a source of problems then shut it down.
What’s wrong with me? You’re the one deciding that someone else should moderate and confront hate on a subreddit because you feel entitled to their efforts.
Having consideration for others is the baseline of being a decent person. Why is this a problem for you?
Golly gee, how awful of me to expect someone who volunteered for a position of authority to actually do something their position requires.
This isn’t random bystanders catching flack, these are people who SIGNED UP TO DO A JOB. If I volunteered to help at a soup kitchen and then just never showed up, the soup kitchen has a right to be upset with me. They are, in fact, entitled to be upset with me because I made a promise to help. And then I broke that promise.
They did do what their position required they shut down a thread that was filled with hate that had no bearing on the game.
You think they should just have to accept dealing with hate non-stop because you have zero empathy for these people as you have made clear in your posts.
You seem to think subreddits shouldn’t be focused on the subject of the subreddit which is really weird.
If this was a black person you would see this differently no? Veiled transphobia here
The problem is: why do you need to talk about these arguments in a game subreddit ? Or in any other place not dedicated to these arguments ?
No, I would see this the same way. It’s a video game subreddit. They signed on to moderate discussions about the game not social issues.
Why do you feel entitled to the moderator’s time and energy? Why do you think you have a right to force them to confront hate on a subreddit that is about a space exploration video game?
Coincidentally just started playing recently, it’s really cool to have a community on Lemmy now for the game, at least.
I just restarted. It’s wonderful fun. I’m working my way towards a black hole and I’ve no idea why.
Black Hole’s will send you to the other side of the galaxy and closer to the center of the universe. The effects are cool but sometimes your ship will receive damage when you go through them, so be ready.
Bigot Reddit mods? I cannot believe this.
But chuds told me Reddit was “too far-left”, because they weren’t complete bigots, and don’t allow networked harassment and doxing.
I still lurk some of the drama entertainment subs like AITA and relationship advice and there’s still a strong left lean on those subs. Posts on the lines of “AITA for ending personal relationships with Trump supporters” aren’t rare while I don’t recall seeing any from the other side (though there have been some that avoid mentioning anything more than “political differences” and keep the specifics vague and might be from the other side, but the fact that this is the closest says enough on its own).
Comments that support Trump get downvoted, though more neutral “voice of reason” style comments can do ok.
Lots of AI posts, though. It’s been going from a Jerry Springer kind of vibe to more of a Jerry Seinfeld vibe, where it’s sometimes still entertaining but mostly made up.
Reddit is so big that it encapsulates everyone. You’ll find far left. You’ll find far right. You’ll find a few people who somehow missed the joke, and think birds not being real is an actual conspiracy.
My point is, you can’t say “reddit is _____”, because they have 500 million monthly users.
Even Lemmy, which is a fraction of the size, has far right people here.
If the “discussion” was getting too heated for the mods to handle, locking (but not deleting!) the thread sounds like the right call. What’s the alternative? Ban one bigot, five more will appear. Ban them and lock the thread to prevent more bigotry.
Ban one biggot, five more appear. Ban five more. 10 more appear. Ban them all until they run out of accounts.
Aren’t there options to restrict posting to people that have been around the sub for a while though? Pretty sure I have seen others do it. Might be a better choice as it means you are only banning community members that are bigots and bigots from outside of the community can’t comment.
That allows the community to continue to enjoy the place.
If that’s an option, agreed. It’s been a while since I’ve been active over there so it didn’t occur to me.
Did you happen to save the pics of those planets? Sounds dope
I would love to see things get more active over here. It’s a pretty good community on Reddit, but the mods are way too heavy handed.
If you watch “new” when a big update drops, you’ll see almost every post about it get removed. Only the special chosen post gets to stay up, and it’s never the first one. I can’t help wondering if it’s a karma grab.
NMSCoordinatesExchange has some annoying rules, too. If you post a gallery of finds it can get removed for not being split into multiple posts. If I post a gallery, it’s because I don’t have the time or inclination to spam the sub with dozens of related items. Would they rather nobody sees them at all? Seems like a poorly considered rule for a place that’s supposed to encourage sharing of content.
What a shock… the social media site who’s admin’s supported the Jailbait subReddit (until they were publicly shamed for it) are actually a bunch of assholes. How surprising.
Is this the sane site that refused to take down a porn selling subreddit after they were sent screenshots proving the platform was being used to exchange CSAM?
