Summary
Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro and 36 others have been charged by federal police with conspiracy and attempting to overthrow the country’s democracy through a right-wing coup.
The accused include top allies, such as former defense ministers and intelligence officials.
The charges follow an investigation into efforts to dismantle the constitutional state, backed by evidence from financial records and plea deals.
This comes days after arrests in a separate plot to assassinate President Lula da Silva and other officials.
Bolsonaro denies involvement in the 2022 election conspiracy.
Um…
😳
I’ve seen this one.
Is Brazil gonna re-elect the coup plotter like some other country did?
Please don’t do that again.
Hopefully their court system moves faster than snail pace

On 30 June 2023, the Brazilian Superior Electoral Court barred Bolsonaro from running for public office until 2030 as a result of his attempts to undermine the validity of Brazil’s 2022 democratic election, as well as for abuse of power with regard to using government channels to promote his campaign
In February 2024, the Brazilian Federal Police raided former government officials and ordered Bolsonaro to hand in his passport over accusations that he and his allies tried to overturn the results of the 2022 election and planned a coup d’état.[180] In March 2024, witness documents released by the Superior Electoral Court were made public. According to two military officials, Bolsonaro had plotted to overturn the 2022 results and presented top military officials a plan to carry out a coup with the goal of keeping him in power.
no, they have a functioning democracy in brazil
Bruh.
The most powerful country in the world couldn’t even do democracy better than a “Third World Country”
🤦♂️
From that to a “functioning democracy” there’s a large distance. But yeah, it’s not completely disfunctional
I was trying to go for the most savage burn. I’m sure there are still institutional problems with the system in Brazil, but it’s been doing some good work on the high level (fining twitter, banning bolsonaro)
And insofar as Brazil isn’t a democracy it’s a kritarchy (rule of judges) which is generally supportive of democracy over autocracy so it’s no wonder that Bolsonaro and his goons are in deep shit. They’re enjoying throwing the book at him.
We do kinda have a two party system tho, and there is already a bigger asshole (Pablo Marcal) planning to run for president, after getting thrid place in the biggest city.
At the very least he legally can’t be elected on the next election.
No, Lula is a leftist. Biden was center right. The situation is different in Brazil
False equivolcolocnananence. The other country never even had the balls to jail the insurrectionist.
No they care about their democracy and actually jailed the insurrectionist and co.
It’s like looking through a mirror…
Great … I thought we went through the assassination/coup phase of history already … looks like we’ll be repeating all that crap again.
I am guessing Trump will either not make it to inauguration day alive or they will 25th Amendment him soon afterward since his brain is soup.
vance will plot assassination against trump, then claim democrats did it.
Mark. My. Words.
many will. but the 25th amendment seems more reasonable to purs… okay, got it.
Oh, sure. Show off how you have a functioning democracy and judiciary. Rub it in our (US’s) faces.
I’ll just be over here, sobbing in the corner for the next four (plus) years…
Lula is in power but the far-right threat to his administration remains. Last Wednesday night, a member of Bolsonaro’s political party was killed after apparently blowing himself up with homemade explosives while attacking the supreme court.
During a search of the man’s trailer, police reportedly found a cap emblazoned with the slogan of Bolsonaro’s far-right movement: “Brazil above everything. God above all.”
I love it when jackasses like that blow themselves up. As the Europeans say, it is an ‘own goal’.
And the innocents they take out?
This one couldn’t.
Usually there are no innocent bystanders when bombmakers blow themselves up when assembling their bombs.
They didn’t kill themselves while assembling a bomb, they accidentally blew themselves up when trying to blow up the state of the justice lady (blind with a scales thingy)
I think they died while making the bomb. OK so it isn’t a proper own goal then.
This comes days after arrests in a separate plot to assassinate President Lula da Silva and other officials.
Oh there’s no relation I’m sure. Zero. Zip.
