First of all this isn’t an anti-weed post, I use weed regularly and enjoy it. What I’m arguing against is occasional use, once a month or less, at that level your tolerance usually resets between uses. The thing they don’t tell you in health class is tolerance goes both ways, you become tolerant to both the positives and negatives of use. For weed the negative im referring to is anxiety, though short term memory loss also goes down with more regular use. Whenever I take a break and then start doing weed again I get way too in my head and anxious which usually goes away after a couple sessions. This has also become worse with modern legal strains that have become way too concentrated. Dispensary edibles are a bit better since you can dose them easier but even then the longer the time in between uses the more likely you’ll forget what’s a good dosage. I see this a lot with friends who don’t regularly do weed and they smoke with me, get way too high, have a bad time and then won’t do it again for a while and repeat the cycle. So for those type of people I’d recommend not doing weed at all or doing it more regularly so you can keep your tolerance up. No shame in picking either but the middle ground kinda sucks.

EDIT: a lot of people are saying get lower percentage strains or higher CBD ones, to that I’d say I wish I could. I always try and get the lowest percentage stuff I can find at the dispensary and that stuffs still usually in the high teens percent THC with less then a percent CBD here in SF. So I guess part of this is just a rant on how stupidly concentrated modern weed is and how it leaves little margin for error.

Perhaps as the more experienced smoker, you can be a good friend and offer a lower dose that is more suited for their tolerance. Maybe don’t pack a big-ol bong rip for someone who hasn’t smoked in months. Chop up that chocolate bar into something a little more manageable. If they wanna buy something, suggest something a little more controllable like a vape. And most of all, if you’re pressuring people who are on the fence into smoking, maybe just stop doing that.

You can also (and I recommend this anyway if you have anxiety) buy hemp legally in most places, sold as a cbd flower (you can probably also buy it online in most places), and mix it with the weed.

The higher cbd content helps to offset the super high thc levels of modern weed. Gives you a much more pleasant less anxious experience.

This. Yeah CBD is probably the way to go for these people. All the fun and flavor with less of the compound that gets you “high.”

The cannabis arms race to the most potent strains are a step in the wrong direction imo. Coming from the industry the only way to sell your product was if it tested at 27%thc or higher.

Honestly, it’s not even less of a high, even if you use medically/heavily, it’s just more balanced. When you smoke, a ton of the goodies are combusted anyway, but if you mix you stretch the same stock and the cbd nicely compliments the thc, like old-school weed that topped out at 10%. That was when it was good. Sure you maybe needed more than one hit to be done for the night, but it was a better experience.

But I’m totally with you about the potency race, it’s the wrong way, and modern weed is very anxious weed. It’s just really strong and out of balance. And it’s just not a good time when you are naturally anxious, which more and more people are…

I would never pressure anyone to smoke, I just offer and pass it around until someone says there good. It’s just that I don’t know there tolerance and I’m not going to tell someone they can’t handle something, that’s there decision. I’ll tell them the percentage/mg but like I said they probably don’t know / remember there limit or tolerance as well. The person doing it has to figure out these things themselves because it effects everyone differently, but if they don’t use it enough to figure that out they’re just going to end up having a bad time.

Youre smoking weed without any CBD in it.

If you’re an occasional smoker and anxiety is a problem then try CBD high strains, as CBD attenuates the effects of THC.

I wish I could find shit with high CBD. Edibles are usually better for this and I can usually find a 1:1 CBD: THC but for bud it’s either 25% THC and 0.6% CBD or 14% THC with no CBD.

Pro tip: Go to the nearest hemp shop and get some CBD flower, mix it in with your regular high-THC bud at a 1:1 ratio. There’s not a ton of 50/50 THC/CBD strains floating around, so if you want the chill effects you gotta take matters into your own hands.

        Yeah.

I live in a country which still has very backwards attitudes and laws about cannabis, so I grow my own, and I grow a strain that has a 1:1 relation of CBD:THC.

CBD is very undervalued when it comes to using cannabis to get high and very overvalued when it comes to using CBD without any THC.

I myself am a thcv evangelist. Every strain that I have tried that had high thcv content in it like Durban Poison or tansie have always been really positive uplifting euphoric highs that don’t give you the munchies and drift away gently when they are done.

I am a very occasional user, I have probably smoked weed four times this year, maybe five. I live in a legal state so I can go to the dispensary and pay cash for my stuff.

Other more hardcore weed smokers that I occasionally hang out with have mentioned that the weed that I have purchased is very good and very enjoyable when smoked in a social setting.

Ask around and see if you can find a high THC v content strain for your next recreational enjoyment experience.

Almost seems like dosing yourself with CBD when consuming cannabis might lead to a more pleasant experience all in all.

CBD has never had any effect on me that I am aware of, but I’ve never taken CBD in addition to THC

Portion control. Don’t assume you can handle a full joint after a t-break. When I’m smoking infrequently a joint can last me 6+ sessions and I’ll be perfectly happy.

I enjoyed occasionally smoking weed in high school, back when it was Mexican dirt weed that came across the border packed in 5 pound bricks, seeds, stems, and all. I can’t touch the stuff today. One half a hit sends me so deep into my own thoughts that I just want to tear my own head off to make it stop. I absolutely hate it, and yet I have to deal with 6+ hours of it. I never really feel normal again until the next day. Because of this, I haven’t smoked weed in years. Last time I tried it was before bed, just in case I hated it, then I could go to sleep. I did hate it, but I wasn’t able to sleep. That’s when I decided I wasn’t touching it again.

Where, I’m in SF and can barely find anything under 20% . I ask at the dispensary what’s there lowest percent strain and they usually point me to stuff in the high teens. Found some shit that was 14% a couple weeks ago and bought an ounce of it because I knew I wasn’t gonna find anything that low for a while.

I’m finding myself longing for the prohibition days in college where the highest shit we got was 9%.

I generally agree, but like someone mentioned you might do well to find a more mellow strain for occasional use, one with low THC and more minor cannabinoids that balance out the effects.

Occasional weed use is how I use weed.

I have plenty of legal 5mg edibles to choose from. I usually grab a can that contains 20 or so, share with friends and it lasts me a few months.

Sometimes friends and I share vapes, both flower and liquid/oil based. I have no idea how strong they might be. Sometimes a puff or two and I’m set for the night. Sometimes it’s nowhere near enough and I’ll have more.

Never am I anxious. Never are friends of mine overly anxious. If someone has too much, they take a minute, they take a moment, hell they take an hour if they need.

Everyone has to learn their tolerance, just like we had to learn for alcohol. Maybe it’s a bit more complicated with marijuana, but it’s the same idea.

Also weed all the time is a terrible idea. As is weed never. (Although ultimately it’s up to you, as long as you’re happy and it isn’t ruining your life.)

    Excellent unpopular opinion.

Can’t people just go without recreational drugs? I realize that marijuana is significantly better than alcohol but addictions can ruin lives including those of people around you.

OP suggested two alternatives: complete abstinence, or more frequent use, and they were specifically addressing the demographic of “occasional users who are turned off because of their sensitization to the negative effects”

To me that is a pretty reasonable take and doesn’t seem to be promoting regular use as much as it is troubleshooting a particular problem. But of course if it came across differently to you that is fine.

Weed is hailed as so safe, but the stuff today is more powerful than hashish was when I was a kid. It’s powerful enough that I’ve seen people go through some pretty serious withdrawals when they quit.

This is anecdotal, but I know a girl that if she gets sober she starts shaking and getting very uncomfortable.

She has a psychological addiction to weed and for the most part she’s fine it’s just it sucks that she has to spend money to feel normal now or she has to go through a good long period of feeling really really shitty to get back to normal.

Because headaches, sweating, and irritability are inconvenient, unpleasant certainly, but not unsafe as their original comment implies

The most unsafe part of smoking weed is the actual smoking part of it. Or if you’re a dumbass and do something risky while you’re stoned.
