Not the oldest meme, the dancing baby was from 1996

The oldest is this one from 1990 -Godwin’s Law (valid until today)

But memes are much older than internet, this one is from 1921

Of course, but that’s why my post’s header is “perhaps the oldest Internet meme”.

Yes, but the dancing baby isn’t the oldest, maybe the first animated (gif). The word meme is based of the book The selfish gene from 1976, which exposes the memetic hypothesis of cultural transmission. Dawkins names the smallest unit of information that can be transmitted as a ‘meme’. The other from 1921 I put only because with this the meme celebrate 100 years and it isn’t diferent from the tipical actual “expectation-reallity memes” A lot of history with internet, same with the emoticons (the first is from 1648) https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2014/04/the-first-emoticon-may-have-appeared-in-1648/360622/ Maybe much older https://www.livescience.com/59895-oldest-known-smiley-face-emoji.html
