a friendly advice: I think you’ll get a better discussion going on if you stop calling things gross and start explaining why they are gross to you. you can start by finding some common ground, the best I can think of is Lemmy, you are both using a free and open source platform that’s decentralized, so you probably care about user freedom. then you can say “hey, as far as I know, north korea isn’t even connected to the internet, and they use an OS called red star on their computers, which fingerprints any media it plays, don’t you think that’s terrible?”. that being said, I myself am shocked that people defend it, but questioning their upbringing doesn’t really help.
But it’s like lost at this point right? I wouldn’t have a proper discussion with a neo nazi supporting facism or wanting to eradicate jews. I feel we are moving towards like at the edge of things.
I’m kind of feeling uncertain if these are people that should be platformed. And if so, platformed responsibly.
But maybe you can change my mind on this.
Edit:
By talking about platforming I’m not talking about if these people should be able to comment here. In this instance I’m platfrmed by them and I’d have to ban the entire instance almost. I’m thinking in a general sense. Are these people that in another setting should be given a big platform?
well, lemmy’s communists are at least benevolent, opposed to malevolent neo nazis. for me that’s enough to think intelligent discussion is possible, but maybe it’s because I have had to deal with fringe groups a lot. not to mention that I hate capitalism too, so what they say resonates with me.
the most important thing is deciding if it’s worth your time staying here and discussing. if you reach the conclusion that it’s not, then subscribe to some subs and only browse those. but don’t just call this and that gross, it doesn’t achieve anything, but gets them defensive. but if you like discussing or think that you’re responsible, you should be willing to understand them. as you know, much of the difference between what you believe and what they believe comes from trusting different sources, and it’s hard to do anything about it. it’s much easier to find a common ground.
personally I’m only disturbed when people talk about the glorious DPRK or go to great lengths to defend some stuff.
I feel it’s important that there is written that it’s gross so it isn’t normalized. And there doesn’t need to be a proper argument behind it, just that there is expressed dissagreement is enough and that one doesn’t approve the problematic behaviour.
well, it’s already normal to have such beliefs in lemmy, and no way alemmy in its current state can normalize something in society as a whole. so calling it gross is pointless. it only makes reaching an agreement or mutual understanding less likely.
well, there is no agreement or understanding for supporting north korea. even though its different from a facist or a nazi, its basicly like trying to do it with them. and there is a point to do it, its sso people who visit dont see it as the only viewpoint. even though majority of people here are baserment sewage there are people here who arent that too. It also makes a space or a flag to go under against these people.
see, saying that only increases hostility, and if someone manged to see this post, that downvoted comment trying to ridicule other users won’t impress them really, and won’t let them know there are different opinions.
it’d be much more constructive if you had given a list of things that are wrong with North Korea, and then had a discussion about it. before ypu say there’s no point in discussions, consider that you guys believe in different versions of reality, it’s not that one of you is evil and the other an angel. you believe North Korea is danger to humanity, they believe it’s just slandered by the west. discussion could only be pointless if they thought North Korea is a dangerous and crazy country and supported it at the same time.
and if you engage in a genuine conversation it’s much more likely for others to see there’s two different points of view.
but I’m being genuine and honest about how I feel. I’m not going to pretend to be some stoic aristocrat too good to go into the mud.
But I really understand your point and where you are coming from. I’m trying to go more towards your direction, but still I feel it’s appropriate to call gross things gross. It’s a conflict within myself
Is it wrong to call supporters of the dictatorship of north korea 'basement sewage? And was this also thought of as ableism? I don’t see how it is ableism. I didn’t @ any person specificly either, I was talking in general.
But I hope you have leniency on me for this. I wouldn’t get a warning for that any other place, but if it is not allowed I will listen to that.
That’s pretty gross. I can’t imagine the upbringing and current situation you must have lived through to come to support such a regime.

Don’t call people “basement sewage”. This is one of many warnings we’ve given you not to talk down to people.
