European security is expected to loom large as 48 European leaders gather in Moldova on Thursday (1 June) for a summit staged as a show of diplomatic force vis-à-vis Russia.

Moscow denies attacking Ukrainian civilians, but the recent torrent of strikes on Kyiv suggest a concerted strategy with clear objectives, " says Dr Jade McGlynn, Research Fellow in War Studies at King's College London.

Jessica Tuomela has crossed finish lines, won gold for Canada and travelled the world, but one of her most vivid memories will always be one close to home in Saanich, B.C.

Facebook, Instagram to block news stories in California if bill passes
From Australia to Canada, Big Tech has resisted lawmakers' efforts to force them to pay news publishers for carrying their articles. Now, that battle is playing out in California.

Manahel al-Otaibi, a 29-year-old certified fitness instructor and artist who frequently promoted female empowerment on her social media accounts, was accused by Saudi authorities of using a hashtag – translated to #societyisready – to call for an end to male guardianship rules. She has not yet been convicted or sentenced and remains in detention. But previous similar cases suggest that public demands for fundamental women’s rights – including inheritance rights, and ability to end a marriage by an abusive husband – have been deemed seditious.

Erin O'Toole says the Canadian spy agency informed him that Beijing's campaign used social media, specifically the Chinese-owned messaging app WeChat. Ahead of the expected trial this week of two female journalists, who were among the first to report on the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Jina Amini who died last year in police custody, reporters in Iran have described the violent beatings, threats and imprisonment they have faced for reporting on protests in the country.

Shootings on the streets, shootings at home, shootings in cars and buses and trains. And in schools, and on beaches.

Stories told to children who lived under the Russian occupation in Ukraine’s southern Kherson province were designed to terrify them. When the fast-approaching Ukrainian forces came into Kherson, people added, they would hurt anyone who had been in contact with the Russians. The web of lies were often spun by the children's own pro-Russian relatives who got corrupted by Russia.

China’s dependence on food and energy imports could be its biggest weakness in a potential future conflict with Taiwan
While many analysts believe – or perhaps hope – that western countries would not weaponise hunger against China in the event of a conflict with Taiwan, the war in Ukraine has shown that energy is highly likely to be hit with sanctions. And unlike Russia, with its vast reserves of natural gas, China is dependent on other countries for much of its energy.

>Back to Lauren, though, who last year declared: “I’m immersing myself in philanthropy and strategic giving.” Which sounds a lot more fun than Amazon warehouse workers immersing themselves in strategic peeing-in-bottles.

We’re a collective of individuals upset with the way social media has been traditionally governed. A severe lack of moderation has led to major platforms like Facebook to turn into political machinery focused on disinformation campaigns as a way to make profit off of users. Websites with ineffective moderation allow hate speech to proliferate and contribute to the erosion of minority rights and safe spaces. Our goal with Beehaw is to demonstrate and promote a healthier environment.

    Some thoughts on our philosophy:

Operating our server costs money. If you donate, you should know that 100% of the costs will go towards server time, licensing costs, and artwork. In the future if we need to hire developers or other labor, it would be sourced through the Open Collective Foundation, and it would be transparent to the community before any changes were made.

As a news aggregator and a social media outlet, with a focus on being a safe and accepting space, we strive to create a positive social impact. We will, also, help to connect underprivileged and minority individuals with education and civic participation by promoting a healthier online experience.
