Some of the music I liked in my teens still sounds great. But definitely not all of it. Most of the music I love now would have been completely unavailable to me in the 70s and 80s. It took streaming music and algorithms to introduce me to the music of West Africa. So many amazing musicians in that part of the world, and I never even knew it existed.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•this 82 year old woman dressing like she was 40 or younger makes me think about how ridiculous I'll look like when and if I reach that age. Am I misguided?
1·8 months agoI don’t know if I have ever seen anyone talk this way about an old man’s clothing choices. Usually it’s only women who are held up to this cradle to grave scrutiny of our every move. When you say that she looks “ridiculous,” you’re channeling the full weight of a sexist and ageist culture.
If you saw an old man dressing flamboyantly, you’d smile quietly and go on with your day. You wouldn’t bother trying to analyze your reaction because you would barely have one. And there’s your answer.

6·3 years agoI will go to my grave believing that story. No one can take this away from me.
When this song came out, I was struck by how much it applied to my life. I was living in a shotgun shack, in place I’d never been to before, we drove a Winnebago, and I was a beautiful wife, only not his beautiful wife, and I most definitely wondered how I got there!

3·3 years agoI’m another Joey user, and I said I would be willing to pay around $3/month, and yes, I’d love to see a Joey for Lemmy. I spend hours every day on Joey (or I did,) so it seems only fair to support that.

Literature@beehaw.org•How do you usually get new books to read?English
3·3 years agoI’m print disabled, which means I have problems reading printed text, but am not blind. Mainly, I have to be doing something with my hands or it’s really hard to focus long enough to read a book. So I get through a lot of audiobooks.
In addition to Audible and Libby, I am also eligible for the National Library Service, which has its own app. If you, or anyone you know might qualify, here’s a link to the US NLS. There are similar libraries in most other countries, and there are treaties to make books available to people living abroad in their own language.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What niche reddit community do you want to see find a place on the fediverse?
7·3 years agoThere are several groups on reddit that I have enjoyed, and am going to really miss unless I find some fediverse versions. It’s the agony columns, all the ones where people ask for advice. Like r/AITA, and r/RomanticAdvice. There are so many of them.
What are some similar ones in this platform?
It’s been a while since I played, but I remember BlishHUD being really useful. It’s kind of a Swiss army knife, with all kinds of helpful options, like pathing, instructions for dailies, and so much more. Looks like they’re still active. https://blishhud.com/

I have spent many happy hours playing GW2 and ESO. Mods have improved the GW2 experience significantly, but the game is still playable without them, if somewhat annoying. ESO is completely unplayable without lots and lots of mods, at least for me. I’m so directionally challenged that I gotta have my minimap.

You will meet many men in your life, and some of them are going to be wonderful. In fact, there will be men who are wonderful in ways you don’t even realize until much later.
But there are also entirely too many creeps, and unfortunately, you have to have some ugly experiences to really get a sense of who is and who isn’t a good guy. Especially watch out for older men, especially ones who flatter you and tell you how beautiful and mature you are. These guys are everywhere, and girls your age are their prime fixation. If you are careful and lucky, you can learn to spot them without becoming their victim, and without getting pregnant or married.
You’ve seen those nature shows where the baby sea turtles hatch on shore and have to make it to the water before the hungry birds devour them? You’re a little turtle now. Just focus on the water (your goals for your future,) and don’t let the bastards gobble you up.
