Since making the announcement last night to become community driven, The Agora has quickly become an active place full of discussions, proposals and voting. In order to keep things going I’m looking for volunteers to help facilitate the conversations and apply the rules that have been determine by this community.
As a mod of The Agora you should be active on our main matrix channel and willing to help facilitate conversations between other mods and users.
As a mod:
- you will still retain your right to vote just like anyone else.
- may be dismissed by the community if its felt you are abusing your powers or pushing your own agenda.
- will help maintain order.
- follow the rules of the community.
Not sure you want to help mod this community but would like to nominate someone else? go ahead and nominate someone.

As an intermittently feral cat, you got my vote
I would like to be a mod.
I guess I should say that I’m both highly intelligent and extremely humble 🙃
But seriously, I’m a positive, idealistic person who is willing to engage with anyone on their terms. I tend to be objective and rational at times, but I’m also very empathetic. I’m quite adept at communicating effectively via text. And I’m very committed to the health of this community/server.
My most important task as moderator would be protecting the direct democracy we are trying to establish here. I want this to be a chamber of debate, a political body where every member of this server has a voice.
But there must also be some level of formality and procedure such that the most cogent points can rise to the surface. This is the Agora, we need to put our best foot forward when we come here, because it’s important to make the right decisions that enhance our collective enjoyment of this experience.
I’m pretty easy to get along with once you know me.
Already in the main matrix channel!
I’ve messaged you my application.
I’m interested in helping to mod The Agora.
Despite ongoing monopolization and domination of the free internet today, I personally still believe in the potential of technology to democratize institutions and I think a platform like lemmy is uniquely suited to develop and promote a powerful form of representative democracy.
I haven’t really modded any kind of forum in the past, but I am motivated to commit my time and interpersonal skills to the development of this community.
I support free speech as long as it does not break any laws. I am a long time redditor. I witnessed digg destroy itself, and for many years I have been disappointed in how a centralized reddit has become captured by corporate power.
Concerning the potential of sh.itjust.works/c/agora, I currently see the community as being more suited to discussion, and I’m not entirely sure how we could apply this site in it’s current form to the process and procedure of voting on policy. It may be useful to consider moving the actual voting to a decentralized platform that is designed around voting on specific items. Something on a blockchain? A DAO application? Anyways, please let me know if I can be of service to this unique experiment in representative democracy and self-government.I would mod, my comment history speaks for itself.
There are a lot of people violating the ‘be respectful’ rule in this community.
This isn’t a subreddit for memes or a place to farm karma with hot takes. I believe that the intention was to have a space where people could communicate and debate about the

Here, you are encouraged to speak your mind, share your insights, and engage in stimulating discussions. This is your opportunity to shape and influence our collective journey, just like the free citizens of Athens who gathered at the Agora to make significant decisions that impacted their society.
You’re not alone in your quest for knowledge and understanding. In this community, you’ll find support from like-minded individuals who, like you, are eager to explore new perspectives, challenge their preconceptions, and grow intellectually.
Remember, every voice matters and your contribution can make a difference. We believe that through open dialogue, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to discovery, we can foster a community that embodies the democratic spirit of the Agora in our modern world.
The instance, and social media as a whole, would benefit from a common square where people can have discussions in a civilized manner. I think this is a cause that’s worth donating time towards supporting and I would be willing to do so.
I also work in tech, computer security specifically. I know python and I work with Linux professionally and recreationally. I’m not volunteering to be a programmer but I can write scripts if needed.
