So, I was looking for shows similar to GoT and found out about The Last Kingdom and Vikings. I saved Vikings for later because I heard that it becomes soap opera-ish in the last few seasons. I don’t really like shallow characters even if the visuals or action scenes of a movie/show is great.

Edit: Also, if you have recommendations for other similar shows, do mention them!

I like it, but it’s not a GoT. GoT was wayyyyy more complex with different story arcs. TLK is mostly following the story of one main protagonist. It’s missing the complicated ethical dilemmas that GoT was great at. The speed of stories developing is also a lot quicker than GoT seasons 1-4, so TLK feels rushed. Finally, the writing, dialogue in particular, isnt as good. GoT has some amazing dialogues and character building.

On the other hand, it does make some neat political commentary that was missing from GoT, especially regarding religion. Another minor thing I liked were the accents. It’s also missing a lot of the fantasy stuff (e.g. no dragons). Lastly, while the story itself is fiction, the overall trajectory and setting aligns with actual history. This made me interested in learning the related history which I knew nothing about.

What they do share is the medieval setting and political maneuvering of the time. They also both include traumatic scenes that are typically not shown in other shows.

Overall though, I like it and suggest that you give it a few episodes to try out. Like GoT, it took me a few episodes to really get into it, but then I was hooked.

Thanks for the detailed comment! I started watching the show just after I made the post and I’m finding it pretty decent. Though the difference in the budget of both shows is noticeable, which isn’t really a bad thing in my book.

Vinland Saga did this for me and it’s also the reason I’m curious about this show.

The three lord of the rings extended editions are the run time of a show. I highly recommend them if you’ve never seen them.

Kinda embarrassed to say that I haven’t watched them lol. I thought I would watch them after reading the books, which I guess will take a while.

Nah thats okay mate. They are long watches with the way everything saves your progress these days I honestly recommend watching them like a tv show. Just watch them at your own pace take a break after an hour if you want. But ultimately watching through them all is an incredible experience especially if you like game of thrones.
