As much as I love Gnome and appreciate the minimalistic interface it offers, hiding the dash behind a click has always seemed like a bad idea to me. I use a desktop with a traditional mouse so maybe I am not the target audience.
Foe me it works great, however, I fully agree and in my opinion the dash should have configuration options for when it is visible and where it is placed.
