Every day I am forced to confront that the the Democratic Party won the White House and Congress in 2020 and instead of doing the smart thing and ending the filibuster, packing the court, and going scorched Earth on the GOP which, mind you, had just tried to overthrow the election, they kicked back and proceeded to do absolutely nothing of note except cut a blank check for the most televised genocide of the last 30 years.
A disciplined party could have un-fucked everything trump did in the span of a few month, but they chose not to. They chose not to, and now we’re all paying for it.
The purpose of a system is what it does.

Why would Brazil care about US tarrifs since their main exports are in direct competition to America’s main exports? China didn’t buy a single US soybean this year, but they aren’t going without.

Ok.
Still voting Democrat because…
-
They are not Republicans.
-
No 3rd party is even remotely viable and no 3rd party is doing the work necessary to become viable. The last 3rd party candidate for president received half of a single percent of the total votes cast, proving that no 3rd party can win a presidency, or even come close.
So until a 3rd party actually starts winning local/state elections (they aren’t) and gets more than ZERO members in Congress, I’ll keep voting Dem.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
The most important elections coming up will be the primaries. It’s the only opportunity progressives have of getting into office. A much better rallying cry than, “We’re not voting!” Would be, “Primary all of them!”
I agree here. In the past there was this call for candidates to be electable but that is bullshit. Would trump be electable? We can never know so in the primaries go for what you want that is best to you.

I would strongly discourage people from voting third party. I mean, have you looked at the name of the sub?
We need to just form our own parlement. With voting and laws.
So what you’re saying is we’re boned
Vote for the third party then, you absolute dunce. “No one votes third party so neither do I!”
Grow a spine.
Don’t accuse him of not having a spine, he’s grasping the game theoretic arrangement of things quite decently.
In the US, to propel a third party to power, one of the mainstream parties has to utterly lose its position. If that’s going to be the Democratic party at this point of history, the US will be a dictatorship (and civil war will ensue soon). Why? Because Trump will have time to change the system to be president-for-life.
The US electoral system is a two-party system. The root cause: because a region typically has one mandate, and the winner of that region takes it all. To make third parties viable, a proportional electoral system is needed (e.g. a region has 10 mandates, distributed to parties accordig to their percentage of the vote).
When should one apply pressure to make third parties viable?
When it’s calm. When there is not a wannabe dictator on the horizon. It could have been done sometime in the Clinton / Obama era, but not now. Now is a “fasten your seatbelts” period of time.
Here’s the fell for it again award you ordered

… instead of the very real bad situation that has happened with the GOP.
fell for it again
As if there are other options? Why are you blaming people for voting? Are you suggesting they vote for the GOP? What’s your point?
Are you seriously unable to think of anything better to do with your time and energy than get people to vote for the democrats? That’s pathetic. Grow up.
Are you seriously insinuating that I’m campaigning for Democrats for telling you that there are literally no other options? Did my point entirely escape you like that? Stop making shit up and attacking people for disagreeing with you. You’re the one who needs to grow up.
Oh look at you playing your little I’m not touching you game lmao. This is what the democrats support btw this is your lesser evil

You’re the one playing games. Reread what I said and grow up, if you can.
Your lesser evil party is responsible for children being raped by dogs. If there is a hell, every one of you will have your skin flayed in it forever. You should grow old being perpetually devoured by bugs that crawl inside of all your orifices. Every second you spend alive, stuffing your disgusting face prolongs their suffering. Everyone knows what you are. It’s why you and your countrymen all despise each other. You’re broken nihilists who can only screech “HEY!!! THE BAD THING MAKES FEEL GOOD! SO ITS GOOD!” there is no lower form of life on this earth than the liberal. Even your beloved fascist masters are above you, possessing more presence of mind.
this is your lesser evil
It literally is.
I mean how stupid must one be to believe we’d be in the same situation, or worse, than we are right now if Democrats were in control? They were in control before January and our situation was objectively not as bad as it is now.
What clown dimension do you exist in?

They should write in mistermodal instead, so they can feel morally superior
Does diffusing the comments across these accounts make you feel better about spending your entire life feeling empty, staring at a screen, while I enjoy a tropical paradise? Something to mull
Speaking of pathetic…
Bakersfield, huh? 🤣 No wonder you are pissed you live in a settler shithole that’s going to burn to the ground over and over. I studied the ecology in cali. Europeans are seriously an invasive species that needs to be dealt with for the biology of north america to ever be normal again. /s 😜
You’re not the only one living in the tropics. What a smug asshole. lol
German calling people smug asshole expecting to be taken seriously 😂 if I could block every German by default anywhere I would. I’m sure you’re in Argentina sipping mimosas with 135 yr old Hitler, enjoy
Relax, I’m not stalking you. I saw nihilism and felt a need to chime in.
Lol.
You’re in a tropical paradise posting the asinine, mentally ill comments everyone is downvoting you for?
That’s one of the saddest things I’ve ever heard.

Ah but if Democrats did literally anything of value or put up any safeguards whatsoever how can they force you to vote for them every single time? Oh you dont like it well too bad the other option is fascism.
They didn’t win Congress though?
It was 50-48 split in favour of republicans in the senate (with 2 independents) less than that if you could the DiNOs
The only reason the Dems could do anything at all, it’s because the VP can be used as a tiebreaker in certain situations.
Like the Dems are worthless corporate shills and only exist to give the illusion of choice to placate the masses, but you still need to be accurate when you say shit like this.
The two independents were Bernie Sanders and Angus King, both of whom reliably caucused with the Democrats.
And “certain situations” means, if the Senate votes 50/50, the VP can break the tie.
So, yes, 50 reliable Democratic votes in the Senate, plus the VP, plus a majority in the House, means the Democrats did “win” Congress in all but the most pedantic interpretations of the word.
the Democrats did “win” Congress in all but the most pedantic interpretations of the word.
No. Both literally and practically the democrats did not have a majority in the senate, if we go by actual part affiliation, then they only had 48 senators, and if we go by voting record then the DiNOs such as Manchin, Sinema and even Fetterman don’t relaibly vote with the democrats.
The ONLY interpretation in which the democrats won the senate is one where you purposefully try to construct that narrative by picking and choosing pieces of the combination of those definitions to suit the argument.
And even then Harris still cast more tie breaker votes than any VP in history. So it’s a bit disengenous to go after the entire democratic party when it was well documented that it was the actions of a couple of senators, the “”“moderate”“” democrats that repeatedly blocked votes that could have done good from going through.
The important thing to understand about Democrats is even when they have power they actually have no power.
this is actually pretty true. republicans toe the party line even if they disagree. democrats are this mix of conservative to liberal and fight amongst themselves all the time.
I think you’re confusing Democrats (who won the House and Senate and controlled Congress) with progressives (who didn’t).
Manchin and Sinema were Democrats. They became independents in 2024 and 2022 respectively. Fetterman and other conservative Democrats are still Democrats.
The Democrats controlled Congress in 2021-2022, and Manchin and Sinema and Fetterman were part of that ruling coalition.
Manchin and Sinema and other conservative Democrats sabotaged the Democrats’ feeble attempts at progressive legislation, and that was one reason the Democratic Party failed to accomplish anything during Biden’s administration. Another reason was the Democratic Party leadership was either unable or unwilling to control those conservative Democrats.
And still another reason was Biden’s weakness and political cowardice. Which is painfully apparent now, since Donald Trump has proved a President with a majority in Congress can do whatever he wants by executive order. Biden with a Democratic Congress could have done the same thing if he had the guts. If Biden had actually used the power of the presidency, Manchin would have been an irrelevant footnote instead of the single most important vote in the Senate.
But you cannot say that Democrats didn’t control Congress. The Democrats controlled Congress. And then the Democrats let a handful of conservatives in Congress set their agenda and block progressive reform until they lost power.
And the fact that they didn’t do shit for America when voters put them in charge, because party leadership sat on their fucking hands and let their conservative wing set the agenda, is the whole fucking point of the post.
Did you only read half of my comment or something?
If anything you’re the one confusing democrats with progressives here.
Democrats won 48 seats in the senate that year. Republicans won 50. And 2 were independent. Democrats did not control the senate, this is a fact.
As I’ve said in my last comment if you want to talk about party affiliationbto include Manchin and senma, then you don’t get to include the independents.
Democrats did not have a majority in the senate, that is just a fact. You can argue against facts if you want, but all your doing is trying to twist reality to fit your argument.
Also using Trumps lawb breaking and fascist actions as proof Biden could also have broken laws and been a fascist if he wanted to is not only wrong, since the rest of his part is not yes men that agree with him being fascist, but obviously morally wrong.
trump can do what he does because republicans are willing to back him up. Democrats don’t always back up even a reasonable president but would completely abandon one acting like trump and disregarding the constitution.
The Republicans sure dona great job of getting everything they want with a ghoul in the white house and a split Congress. So why can’t the Democrats?
Republicans have 53 seats in the senate whereas in 2020 dems had 48.
That and republicans are all spineless yes men who are in lockstep with the maga platform, they don’t really have any “”“moderates”“” like the Dems have.
even when they have moderates, which in this context is anyone not completely maga bonkers, even then they toe the line.
99% of the time, but they did vote to end tarrifs
how many because last I knew he was still redoing every countries every few days.
If my two options are idiots or evil, I’ll pick idiots. Please give me more options
i’ll pick the idiot too but I hate the people who defend them like they’re gods greatest gift to mankind. No, we need some adults in the room please.
the only way you will get more options is to consistently vote for them in all elections
And yet every election, I’m told that I have to vote for them, because they are gonna fly in and save the day. I’m sure that’ll happen any day now… Yup, any day now…
No, no, they’re not gonna fly in and save anything. They’ve basically dropped even implying they’re going to do that. Now the party line is “vote for us! We’ll do nothing for 4 years! That’s better than actively doing bad things. Remember to vote for us again in 4 years. Or bad things!”
And the most fucked up part is that nothing for 4 years is better than active bad things. We need actual 3rd party candidates and socialists doing some real fucking organizing at the local and state levels and building a coalition. We’re never going to get a viable candidate from a viable party that isn’t complete dogshit in a national election if there isn’t a huge movement behind them, and we’re not going to get that if we don’t stop pretending like it can start at the presidential level.
That said, in a solid red or blue state, get the greens or whoever over the threshold so they get federal funding. But swing state voters have a much harder choice before them.
Whole system is fucked.
Made myself sad.
Going to bed now.
:(
“Guys! I keep voting for the lesser of two evils, but my country just continues to become more and more cartoonishly evil? What should i do?”
Effectively, yeah. Even when they do actually do something ‘good’ it’s only to bring things 5 degrees to the left of where Republicans moved it, which is 30 degrees to the right of where it used to be. Ratchet effect in full force. I’m not arguing for the lesser of two evils, I’m arguing for non-evil to get better at building a base outside of the main two parties. Get to a point where people actually have some local and state reps in the green party, or a labor party or whatever, and they might actually vote for them in a national election. But it’ll never happen until they’ve actually had a chance to see those parties doing something instead of just (with the biggest fucking air quotes imaginable) “”“spoiling”“”" the general
Voting takes less than one day. It doesn’t meaningfully reduce your ability to do activism, while wasting breath on how voting doesn’t matter plays into the narrative that centrists are taught to follow so they don’t take you seriously, which does meaningfully reduce the effectiveness of your activism.
Every leftist who doesn’t vote should be held accountable for making the country they live in so much worse than it would have been if they did vote. Not voting for Harris in a swing state is about as bad as beating up a homeless person, in terms of how much harm it has caused to homeless people.
Spend 1460 days building the new world in the shell of the old, and 1 day voting so that when they try to stop you they do so with cops rather than with the army.
You know that there are elections every year? If you are going to say that elections are the solution, you should probably advocate that people vote in more than just presidential ones.
Also very funny to say not voting for Harris is the same as beating up a homeless person as harrassing homless people was half of her job as a DA in California.
How long does voting take you that voting in all elections in 4 years takes more than a day? I figured about 1½ hours per election on average would be reasonable to pick, travel, and maybe stand in line.
And yes, of course Democrats beat up homeless people. Those people will get harmed no matter who you vote for. The question is how much harm you can prevent by voting for the lesser evil as a sidequest to dismantling the system that gives people like the Democrats power.
Who said voting doesn’t matter? I didn’t see BakerBagel say that at all.
Not voting for Harris in a swing state is about as bad as beating up a homeless person
And voting for Harris, is a vote for genocide. Which lesser evil are you going to choose now?
voting for them atleast stalls for more time to get enough people to come to their senses before the fascists take away any chance at change
Does it? Tell that to the people that the “lesser evil” mass deported. Tell that to the people that died from treable diseases, because they couldn’t afford healthcare. Tell that to the innocent people that the “lesser evil” blew up.
The last few times time we had “lesser evil”, they spent their entire time building the infrastructure that “more evil” is currently using.
I’ve also noticed that every time the “lesser evil” gets voted in, it just reafirms the voters’ belief that the “lesser evil” isn’t going to fix anything. So those voters often end up wanting to throw the entire system away, thus giving us Trump.
and if no one voted for the “lesser evil” Trump would have even more power and would have killed even more people
And if no one voted for the “greater evil” the Democrats would have even more power and would have killed even more people
if no one voted for the “greater evil” than we would no longer need the democrats. Which is my point, we need the democrats until we can educate enough people about the “greater evil” If we didn’t have the democrats, more people would be dead, and any chance of bringing change would be gone. You could be pushing for positive change instead you are crying because things are not already perfect
Why do we need the Democrats for that? What we need is an actual opposition party, not a pretend-opposition party.
If we didn’t have the democrats, more people would be dead…
Citation needed. Why would the killing stop? The Democrats kill innocent people all the time. Harris literally ran on keeping america a “deadly force”.
…and any chance of bringing change would be gone.
What do you think the point of the Democratic party is? Their entire goal is to prevent change from happening, by pretending to fight against it.
You could be pushing for positive change instead you are crying because things are not already perfect
I am pushing for positive change. I want a party that actually fights, which is demonstrably not the Democrats.
If you think my problem is that the Democrats “aren’t perfect”, then I think you don’t understand my problem at all. I think blowing up innocent people, putting people in cages, electing rapists, supporting genocide, screwing over the working class is a bit different than “aren’t perfect”.
we need democrats because it has been shown over and over that introducing a third party simply splits the vote. unless the republicans also have a split at the same time a third party would have no chance of winning and we would just be giving the victory to the fascists.
I didn’t say the killings would stop, they would be lessened, it would be best to stop them all together, but by not doing anything you are simply letting more killings happen.
Democrats are stagnation, but Republicans are regression. Letting the republicans win because the democrats aren’t doing enough is simply changing things for the worse rather than not changing things at all. If you want positive change and if you want the party to fight than you need to set an example.
We get nowhere by splitting the party, that is what I am trying to say, we need to bring others in. You cannot do that by attacking people who are trying to prevent the worst from happening while yourself refusing to help because the alternative is still bad. The Democrats have issues, so it is our duty to do one of three things.
- we could fix the democratic party and actually make it work towards progress. Which means not just being vocal about concerns but actually taking action (seriously we need more people who have concerns about how things are going like you do running for local offices)
- we could continue to focus fully on fighting against the greater evil until it falls and we can create a new party to take down the lesser evil
- we could get lucky with both parties splitting allowing the country to break out of the two party system.
Fighting your allies only leads to the enemy winning, change cannot come from dividing the people who want change

Wow. Cool sub 🙄

I bet you are.
Clown ass sub.
At least I can add user notes to identify a lot of these Lemmy users. Good chance they’re Russian or other foreign actors trying to influence the US.

You know what? If I hire someone to guard my house, and my house gets robbed, because the person I hired (1) didn’t lock the door, (2) didn’t call the police, and (3) was too afraid to confront the robbers themselves, then yes, I will blame the person I hired for not doing their fucking job.
The conceit of representative democracy is that our representatives are public servants. That we appoint them to serve our interests. And when they fail at that task we have the right and the fucking duty to hold them accountable for their failure.

Oh, there’s plenty of blame to go around. I’m not going to support conservative corruption. I’m also not going to waste my time and money supporting an organization that’s clearly unable (or unwilling) to fight conservative corruption.
But hey, it’s your time and money. If you want to piss it away on the corrupt, incompetent, Democrats, people who’ve proven they can’t stand up to the Republicans and will waste any opportunity the voters give them, be my guest.
Supporting those losers comes with a hell of an opportunity cost, though.
deleted by creator
If I wanted to waste my money- it put it towards supporting untested and unproven 3rd party candidates…
Yet you are more than willing to waste your money on supporting a party that has proven that they are’t willing to defeat a corrupt administration, even when they have all the power?
What’s Jill Stein been up to lately? Anyone know? Cornell West? Anyone?
Giving speeches, teaching, doing interviews and debates. I know, because I saw them. It turns out, that when you don’t pay attention to someone, you end up not knowing what they are doing.

You just said that can’t be blamed in your last comment but now they can be blamed but also it’s still not actually their fault… please get an actual argument.
What are you talking about “should they be blamed?”
Yes. Neglect for some things is, in fact, a crime. You can absolutely blame people for neglecting things.
I’m not gonna hold my breath on the Republican Party holding it’s contingent responsible. Thus the only other party with power better take some action.
It may not be the victim’s fault but it is their responsibility.
this is more like blaming a judge for not locking up a known serial killer
deleted by creator
they are not the victim, they had the power to intervene and chose not to

if you are a judge and you are brought evidence of a serial killer murdering people, and instead of convicting them you let them go free, it is your fault if they murder more people. You did nothing to stop them when you were handed the chance to

Your analogy doesn’t make sense.

We did catch them. That’s literally what the post is about, we saw all the horrible things trump did in his first term, we got the chance to stop him in 2020, but nobody did anything. And now hes doing even more horrible things what a fucking surprise
the assholes that are hiring them.
The people who hire undocumented immigrants are good people and understand the positive impact they have on those seeking a better life. I would know, I was once one of those immigrants and got the fuck out of that hellhole of a country as soon as I could. The only assholes I see are the people making it harder for people seeking a better life. It’s already hard enough to live anywhere as it is without your help.

It was a side comment not meant to follow along, Champ. Ironic how you’re having trouble following that.
They’re a troll, ignore them.
Gotta pull it out again. Biden was the best president of my life and I was bowled over with what was accomplished in one term given what he had to contend with.
https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/fact-sheet-the-biden-harris-administration-record
Biden broke the record (that Trunk set in his first term) for the most executive orders by any president in history.
FDR is pretty unanimously considered the most progressive president in US history. There’s handful you could argue for 2nd place, but I think Biden edges out Taft for it. If the Supreme Court had not struck down his student loan forgiveness (which I still think was unconstitutional and partisan of them to do) Biden would be unquestionably 2nd.
I mean even with the strike down he still improved the situation which is ipressive. I mean people take the scrappiness thing as a marketing thing but his administration was like the chumba wumba song.
The best president of your life? What are you, five? Biden didn’t accomplish shit.
HubertManne is a Democrat. Remember: For Democrats, mass deportation, bombing innocent people, torture, and wars are “Accomplishments”. I saw them support it with Obama, I saw them support it with Clinton, and I saw them support it with Biden.
So according to Democratic logic, Biden did indeed to a great job. But civilized people know that Biden was a monster.
ten times that. just name the one you think did a better job in one term. I mean obama was cool but he wasted a lot of time in his first term.
In my lifetime: Clinton and Obama both did a better job than Biden in their first terms. And Reagan and the Bushes all had a far greater impact on the world in their first terms - for good or (mostly) ill - than Biden did. Even Carter, arguably, did a better job than Biden as President, and certainly did far more for the world as a former President than Biden ever will. I have to go back to Ford and the fall of Saigon to find a President I can compare Biden favorably to.
Biden accomplished nothing.
His big signature bill was a greenwashing giveaway to developers - and even though it was passed in 2021, almost none of that money was spent on development before Trump took power and clawed it back, and how fucking incompetent does a President have to be to fail to spend money?
His two main foreign policy “achievements” were giving Afghanistan back to the Taliban and writing Israel a blank check for Gaza.
His immigration policy was morally correct but so badly managed it convinced half of America the Great Replacement was real.
His policy on COVID was to pretend vaccines fixed everything and the economy was fine. (Spoiler: it fucking wasn’t.)
Biden has no legacy. He’s accomplished nothing. At best, he’s going to be remembered as a footnote in history - the first incumbent President to withdraw from his own re-election campaign. At worst, he’ll be remembered as our Paul von Hindenberg - the last President of the Weimar Republic, whose weakness and incompetence brought an end to democracy in Germany.
Completely disagree. No surprise billing was a massive improvement to the aca. The bill was huge which helped to get the economy starting to recover from trump1 while putting the us on a more environmental focused footing which we should have had going for years and our infrastructure is way been neglected and we could use a few more bills like that. I mean it did extend aca subsidies and brought in prescription drug price negotiation with medicare. Then you have what he did for loan forgiveness which considering he could have given up at any point at least he kept going and got it to where payment is based on income and eventually forgiven. Then there is the isp and bank fees. Banning non competes. There was even something that I forget that came up in a discussion here and im like. Man I can’t even keep track of all that they got done. Yeah no president has had his stuff reversed as much as him but that is not his fault. Its laughable and I think disengenous to even mention any republican presidents. Greater ill impact? thats not a reason to raise their ranking. carter did not really get as much done. I mean given the energy crises was a global thing he was in a tight space and he was not as ok as cheating with reagan. Ending afghanistan was huge and thinking the taliban would not take power again is just naive. We were not gonna regime change and forever war may be appealing to some but no I. He did damn great with covid so not sure what your issue is there. As far as isreal it was way better when we were trying to deescalate, limit israeli weapons, and provide humanitarian aid over there as opposed to eliminating all restrictions on military aid and openly encouraging colonialism like what happened like days after trump took office. Its such a pipe dream to think any other president would handle isreal in a different manner that would not be worse (like we have now). Sorry but I get you have your perspective but I lived through all these presidents and again biden impressed me for what gone done given the situation. I mean clinton had it downright easy and again obama wasted his first term. Don’t get me wrong its because of obamas terms that biden came out swinging. I really don’t get other peoples perspectives like this. You and me seem to see and experience things differently.
I can’t read this huge wall of text.
Format your shit my guy.
