As someone who enjoys skiing but doesn’t give a damn about competition, I feel that my people are underrepresented in this story so far.
Is there any more to this joke than “walrus lorge” that I’m not getting?

I guess the sense of putting it there is that the shaking character we see in the next scene is very afraid of falling into snow or going under due to being bigger than other creatures. So what’s said to the walrus he sees in himself while staying at the starting line. IIRC, by the time of winter, all moomins usually go asleep, so the snow itself may be pretty terrifying to him.
