Gemany’s second most supported Bündnis 90/Die Grünen Party will run on a bold social and climate agenda including doubling of carbon price, no production of combustion engine vehicles after 2030, 45 % tax for incomes over 100 000 EUR, 24 months of parental leave and flexible working hours. No decision over candidacy for chancellor.
As expected: getting ready for a coalition with the conservatives, with a few “holy cows” to easily sacrifice in the negotiation for a coalition with the CDU.
While this foreseeable betrayal by this formerly left party does rub me the wrong way, I guess with German politics being shitty as usual, it might be the least bad outcome of this election.
I honestly feel nothing but “fremdschämen” when I think about German politics and I am happy to not live there anymore.
Interesting… I myself found their new platform to be a pleasant surprise. Because I had the exact same sentiments that you just described before but this program for me is much more “rot-rot-grün” than “schwarz-grün” or Jamaica… Can you clarify which points you mean?
Well, maybe I am just a bitter old fart ;)
But to me these party programs have little to do with what they actually plan to do and more about signaling potential coalition partners and voters that eye for certain coalitions (as voters usually vote strategically with a certain coalition in mind).
This party program IMHO stinks of them wanting to go as strong partner into negotiations with the CDU, while keeping enough somewhat leftist points around (but not enough to alienate center former CDU/SPD voters) that an alternative center-left coalition stays a credible threat in the negotiation.
Furthermore some of the left-leaning talking points are pure lip-service that even their own voters don’t believe in anylonger, but which can be “nicely” used in negotiations with the CDU (but no-one else) to get concessions about other points.
