Why Remote Works
www.epistem.inkThere are many books about remote work, some of which I’ve even read (e.g. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]). There are also countless blogs and podcasts on the subject, I’ve gone through too many to list. After working remotely for 4 companies over 5 years, interviews with hundreds of others, managing fully remote teams, interviewing hundreds of employees for remote roles, chatting with thousands of remote workers, and voyeuring the activities of many amazing remote teams, I concluded that, to my surprise, I need to write a different take about why, when and how remote work is worth it.
Some good musings in there. I’ve struggled with getting my company on board with the amount of different communication tools that are necessary since many workers transitioned to a more-remote lifestyle since COVID hit.
I really enjoy that this person talks about some of the benefits of going even more async and how overhead like meetings can be significantly reduced with the right mindset. While I don’t personally mind meetings, it’s because they’re paying me either way and if they wish to be inefficient they’re welcome to do so. But I do push back a lot and let them know how these meetings are wasteful of not just my time but the time of others, and this person lays out some of the benefits of meetings in a way that they often aren’t framed and how that can be fixed in a remote environment with appropriate escalation pathways.
