california is actually the second state to do this: massachusetts did it earlier this year in a sweeping climate bill. nonetheless, it’s big news that california is doing this, because california has the market to force widespread change on account of being the fifth largest economy in the world.
Precisely. California is in fact well known in setting new standards that other states follow, especially regarding car emissions. Actually even Massachusetts was following California, they were just faster to sign it into law.
as it happens i was also wrong, california is the second for a different reason: washington plans to ban them by 2030 aspirationally, but definitely 2035 at the latest. so that’s actually three states at least doing this now
