I was wondering if there is an alternative platform such as Lemmy and Reddit that has these networks of discussion based forums with wide ranging topics but with more free speech/less censorship and a userbase that more realistically represents the actual people of the world.
I noticed that Reddit and especially Lemmy lean extremely far to the left and therefore have a pretty unrealistic bias for things which doesn’t accurately reflect how most average people would see things.
I’m someone who is very open for all kinds of viewpoints and I’m looking for a place where I can get answers that more accurately reflect peoples view.
For example as someone who’s interested in American politics and culture it is basically impossible to learn about it on this platform since everyone here including Americans themselves seems to have a deep hate towards America and the values it stands for.
I also noticed that even though it’s better than on Reddit there are still moderators here who will remove discussions just when people don’t agree on a topic. And I’m looking for something that is not censoring content unless it’s illegal to be able to freely express oneself.
The problem with platforms such as X is that they’re structurally drastically different from something like Lemmy or Reddit. Even though X does have communities, they’re not as wide ranging in topics and don’t focus on more in-depth discussion. Instead X seems to mainly promote prominent individuals opinions over the quality of content itself. Furthermore there also seems to be a character limit for X posts which basically only gives you a few basic sentences as a title without having a more detailed body section (unless you pay for it I guess, but even then the chance that anyone will see your post and answers is very low).
I assume I will probably also don’t get a proper answer on this one since I will now be called a disturbed radical right person who seeks platforms that will promote hate and child pornography or something.
Seconded. OP may exaggerate the problem a little, but the hypersensitivity is real.
For another anecdatapoint, last year I had a unpleasant experience on a mainstream Feddit community after I suggested (very politely) that it was silly to label millions of people in Eastern Europe as “fascists” simply because some rightwing populists did well in an election. My comment got deleted along with a couple of others that were even more anodyne. I complained to the mod in private about the obvious thought-policing, and for my trouble got banned on grounds of “racism”. It was a completely surreal experience and made me question what I was doing here at all.
And of course I know already that some of you here are going to prejudge my intentions just as the mod did. No smoke without fire, right? Banned for racism! Obviously I must have been trying to propagate harmful and pernicious ideas! But no, I really wasn’t. I’m basically a liberal, I tend to vote green. I just enjoy debates, and ideas, and free exchange. Glancing over the comments here, I see that there are already several others who clearly do not enjoy those things, who don’t appreciate having their opinions questioned by others. I agree with OP that this is a problem.
Thirded. If that’s a thing.
Lemmy seems ideologically homogenous. I don’t think my instance is so defederated that I’m missing these posts, I think it’s that non-lefty posts/comments are actively discouraged.
It makes conversation kind of predictable.
Lemmy is mostly left wing, which starts at anticapitalist. But beyond that it’s certainly not ideologically homogeneous. If you want right wing content .world exists.
We already knew you were a liberal when you seconded his opinion.
