Most of the time, I read the “subscribed” feed, sorted by scaled. Maybe once a week or once a month I check what’s in the “all” feed, sorted by top of the week or something like that.
My opinion is, that this is the better way to see the stuff I care about, and it allows me to ignore all the stuff I don’t care about. I’ve seen many people say that you should read the “all” feed, but I just don’t seem much value in that. There are a few people who agree with me, but we appear to be a minority here, hence the unpopular part of this opinion.

I’m gonna give you the opposite approach. I browse all but then keep blocking communities I do not care about at all. It allows me to still see a lot of stuff I would normally not subscribe to and I get to see when new communities rise up. I also alternate between sorting for hot and active.
This is what I do. It’s very satisfying to keep your “All” feed pruned. Easy to do when Lemmy’s not that big.
Seriously? I’ve been working on my list since the api thing and I still get 3 foreign language communities a day. And now that I’ve blocked so much it’s mostly just dreck.
I do the same. The foreign language ones aren’t so bad, it’s the anime ones, especially the creepy porny ones I hate. I block them constantly, but it’s like a creepy incel hydra. Every head I cut off three more spring up in their place.
Oh god yes! That Moe guy is one pervy dude! That is what will keep lemmy from being attractive to new comers.
Is it mostly just one guy? Because I could save a lot of time by just blocking that person.

Sometimes I translate those foreign language memes with Google lens, it’s kinda fun
I do the same. My favorite is ich_iel. I get the sense that many participants in that community are also using translation.
I think you block more than me lol I mostly just block the porn and anime, anything I wouldn’t want to scroll past on my work computer. I leave the language ones alone because I like seeing how Lemmy is growing.
In my android client I simply switch off NSFW posts. That gets rid of most of these.

That’s how I do it. I tend to sort by hot because active doesn’t tend to update as often. Hot shows new content more often and I can filter out more communities I’m not interested in.
That’s a fine approach too. You’re essentially using a black list filter, while I’m using a white list.
That is not an unpopular opinion at all.
i think op may be confusing that some of us sort by all, not because is better, but because content still coming slow and/or we may want to discover new communities. i wouldn’t sort youtube by all, so much stuff, i would rather focus on what i like
Maybe not a one in a million rare, but I get the feeling that most people disagree with my approach. Is it 51%, 90%, something else? Who knows.

And that’s a good thing! I’m blocking communities that aren’t in my language or interest, but the fact that they keep appearing means interests are diverse :)
I wish the language tag was used more extensively. But I understand that most people won’t bother with selecting the language of their post/comment each time.
I think the language selection should be automatically set for each post if you only have one language selected on your profile, or even an option to default to one if you have more selected.
There are only a handful of communities I subscribe to, so that I can sort by /new and never miss a post.
But the fact that they’re slow enough for me to never miss a post means I can’t just browse. So /all is the frontpage for browsing.

But only if you subscribe to lots of communities. I have a couple dozen and only get a few posts per day. So I use my subscribe as home, and then switch to all. But my All is highly censored with word and community filters mostly to remove US politics.
I guess that’s key detail here. I am subscribed to lots and lots of communities, some of which are nearly dead. I want to keep an eye on several small and special communities that focus on a very narrow niche. You’ll probably never see any of those communities in the All feed.

There are many valid ways to use it, but not all are equally popular.
I largely agree with you, but I still look at All frequently. It has the benefit of helping me find more communities to subscribe to, but also there’s just more activity.
How are you supposed to know what you don’t care about, without browsing all to find out?!
As you suggested, there’s no other way. I’ve spent enough time browsing all to figure out that I don’t care about 99% of what the hive mind appears to love with a burning passion.
Very rarely I find something worth reading on all, and that’s why I visit that place about once a month. It’s not a completely useless place, but I find very little utility in it.
I browse it all the time and interact with lots of communities, but the problem is that I turn into an “outside voice” that has more equal-handed views on things, and as soon as I interact with one of these communities that are moving as a unit in lock-step with one another, I upset them and they start following me around places and harassing me.
So yeah. Lemmy is quite…uh…special in that regard.
But hey, at least I don’t get banned from 120 communities because I replied to someone once somewhere in some random thread.
You’re probably healthier not interacting with /all but at the same time, you turn into one of those people who never even so much as sees an opinion counter to your own.
It’s true that I enjoy the company of likeminded people, who doesn’t. However, I also speak my mind at places where these thoughts are not necessarily understood or supported. I take risks that may materialize as a torrent of downvotes. Some of those are also 100% justified, because some of my comments can be really dumb. Occasionally, my comment ends up being 50/50 controversial, and sometimes I get downvoted to oblivion.
I don’t know anyone else who uses Lemmy, but I would agree. That’s the whole idea of subscribing. The local feed and all are full of stuff I don’t wish to see.
That’s why there are subs (or whatever you call them here). I’ve been following reddit that way, as you described, for some decades now. I honestly preferred it before there were subs but, once there were, viewing all was just never the same again.
you can also block the instances that you dislike, but that just takes up a whole lot of time to do.
Does it? You just click on the community, the three dots, then click block community. It takes a second or two.
