Might not be underrated but unknown and forgotten. It launched on Cinemax IIRC which nobody was really watching then. It released in the middle of second golden age of television and just wasn’t lucky enough to break through other good TV which, in the hindsight, was probably one of the first signs of media industry overheating. The Knick deserves better regardless.
