This brush is definitely starting to break in. It ate much less lather this morning and is already feeling a good bit softer on the face. I’m looking forward to seeing how it continues to develop.
Accidentally on theme today, and for one that I suggested! 🤦♂️
I usually remember to check on Thursday mornings, but this week got all wonky with us traveling home on Monday.

- Brush: Maggard 24mm Synthetic
- Razor 1: Fatip Classic Testina Gentile
- Razor 2: Merkur 34C HD
- Blade: Personna Lab Blue (2)
- Lather: Declaration Grooming - Original - Soap (Bison)
- Post Shave: Stirling Soap Co. - Varen - Aftershave
- Post Shave: Goodfellow & Co. - Face Lotion - Kelp & Sea Mineral
Day two of side by side comparison between the Fatip Gentile and 34C.
I can now confidently say that they’re both excellent. Which one wins? Read on to find out!
Ok I’ll give it away – I prefer the Fatip.
Both razors are mild, however the Fatip is slightly milder. A lot of people prefer more blade feel, but I focus on efficiency. If a razor can shave me nice and close and not have a lot of blade feel, it’s the perfect razor for me.
The 34C edges a very slight win in efficiency. The difference is minuscule but was detectable both yesterday and today. The end result is damn near perfect, while the Fatip is just shy of perfect.
So why do I prefer the Fatip? It’s more comfortable. The 34C has some sharp corners on it. If you use it all the time you probably learn to ignore it, but going back and forth the 34C just sorta feels “sharp”. Not the blade, but the razor itself.
Other than that, the razors are super similar. Both have a wide range of angles which is rare for a mild razor, and both cover the blade tabs completely. I just enjoy using the Fatip a little bit more.
Anyway, on to the soap. I can see why Bison has its fans, and I bet when it first came out it was amazing. It’s a very pretty looking lather, although if I remember correctly it’s the type of soap that needs to be loaded sorta dry, which worked great today. I felt a bit of tinge while using it, which I don’t remember feeling before. The scent strength is basically nill, so I don’t think it was frag burn. Maybe something in the base.
Either way, this soap has grown on me a bit since I first got it. Djundjila offered up a Bison soap for next months BVWSC, so maybe everyone will have a chance to try it!
The Thu 05 Dec 2024
- Brush: Rubberset 400-3 with unbleached 26 mm Zenith knot set at 56 mm loft
- Razor: Thiers Issard Frameback
- Lather: Proraso – Sandalwood
- Post Shave: Mühle – Aloe Vera
- Fragrance: Spearhead Shaving Company – Seaforth! 3 Scots
On theme shave today. Proraso Red smells like the hot dry forest floor in the forest where I grew up. A thick layer of dry brown pine needles and pine twigs with boulders of Jurassic limestone poking through. It reminds me of sneaking up on the enemy fortress on all fours in capture-the-flag games as a cub scout.
The pretty and new-to-me frameback that so stubbornly resisted honing did a better job than I feared. I clearly need to figure out how to hone it better, but I’m close, and it gives acceptable shaves.
Dec 5, 2024 - Theme Thursday: World Soil Day

Damp forest floors lined with mushroom caps was the essence of the shave this morning.
05.12.2024 - Tobacco Thursday
- Brush: AP Shave Co. Snakeskin handle w/ 26 mm Silksmoke Flattop/Fan hybrid knot
- Razor: Greencult GC 2.0
- Blade: Rapira Platinum Lux
- Lather: Barrister & Mann - The Full Measure of Man
- Post-Shave: OAM witch hazel & cucumber toner, moisturiser
- Fragrance: Bentley - Bentley for Men Intense EdP
-> 1-pass face shave done before my late shift (and then I forgot to post here).
Truth be told: I’m mostly a head shaver and I already am tired of the goatee/circle beard. So this might be my last face shave in a while to let it fade out. I really dislike looking like every other bald guy since the “bald with goatee” thing turned into a big fad. I was never one for being totally clean shaven either, so I’ll see where it goes. I’m sure nobody here effing cares, but that was my Thursday rant.
FMoM is so great, I’m glad that I got it. Tobacco scents are something I adore and this one is right up my alley. Of course, a B&M soap in Omnibus is always a treat for my skin. Together with Heather’s ZM soaps and perhaps WK Siero, it has the greatest post-shave skin feeling for me. Which is what makes this hobby nice for me: part skincare, part aromatherapy wellness treatment and part collectors obsession.
It also is always nice to follow up a comfortable shave with one of my favourite perfumes - Bentley for Men Intense is very cheap for an EdP, but it has grown on me. Boozy, warm and cozy scent with an aura of success.
FMoM sounds like a scent I’d dig. Another for the list… ;)
I always saw the very positive remarks about it, sometimes straight up hype, so I was glad that it was soon available in the EU. My fav tobacco is still HoM Tobacconist, but FMoM follows very close.

2 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.
Amazing shave today. This new (to me) razor and Dragonsbeard were a perfect match.
The promonent notes of Dragonsbeard are agarwood and oud resin. I’m declaring this to be on theme :)
video if you want to see the razor.
Thanks for sharing, that’s a really beautiful blade.
You keep tempting me to buy some Dragonsbeard. I think I may be a sucker too. :)
Thank you!
You keep tempting me to buy some Dragonsbeard
It is everything that the scent notes suggest. I think it’s a great fragrance, but I’m always drawn to towards those scent notes. What I don’t remember is what time of the year he releases it. It sells out pretty quickly, I think.
