In October I acted carelessly and accidentally deleted Sopuli from my server when trying to update to a newer Lemmy version. Luckily I had backed up the database. However, as this GitHub issue shows, reinstalling Lemmy and restoring the backups wasn’t the easiest thing to do. I got really frustrated and let the thing go for a while, partially because I was busy with other things. I didn’t check Lemmy for a while. Of course, things could have been worse in case of a centralized platform.
Restoring from backups and getting Sopuli running was however on my mind nearly every week. I paid Hetzner’s cloud server bills and thought “I’m not paying this for nothing.” Few days back I saw that the GitHub issue had been resolved and it gave me new motivation to get Sopuli back up again. Yes, this took nearly two months and I could have been quicker but here we are now! Sopuli.xyz is back in business and I promise anything like this to happen never again!
As you can see, Sopuli is now running Lemmy’s latest version 0.14.3. The only downside is that the backup made didn’t include pict-rs which means that all the old pictures are gone.
I want to thank all the users of this instance who were patient while waiting for this to come back online. I also want to thank @dessalines@lemmy.ml, @wintermute@feddit.de and @nutomic@lemmy.ml for giving me advice regarding restoring this instance. Here’s to you!
PS. Happy Finland’s independence day!
Yes, welcome back! Unfortunately, when I finally decided to join Lemmy, it was during Sopuli’s absence, so that kind of determined my choice. Glad to hear you’re not gone though!
