Confirmed its real, and now I am blocking that instance. Thanks for the info. There is enough content on lemmy, a few instances can be excluded.

Was one of the biggest reddit mods for a looong time and constantly powertripping and abusing the report system to the admins, especially regarding his “trans” status that constantly changed and he got many people banned because they “misgenderd” him either unknowingly or because he changed his pronounce more often than his underwear.

        In short, a gigantic asshole.

I love seeing the conversations where you get your ass handed to you by an account that’s banned in your community. Just chef’s kiss

You don’t even know which conversations I’m talking about. You know your post history is public right?

Apparently winning an argument against you is a Rule 1 violation.

Lmao wait, the conversation about unrestricted ego & abuse of power?

Am I reading the right conversation?

Oh yeah. This guy LOVES his Rule 2 but has his own opinion about what exactly “pro-conservative” and “anti-liberal” really mean. Posts about conservative laws getting passed will get deleted because they’re asshole laws like Florida now bans cities and counties from having their own regulations about heat protections for workers but you won’t see any posts about it there. Somehow a successful Republican agenda is against rule 2. It’s fascism. It’s bad faith. It’s morally repugnant. It’s this guy’s MO.

He’s the only active, human mod at !conservative@lemm.ee and he’s making it an echo chamber.

Stick your head further into the ground, then. I’m here to talk about power tripping mods. We can have this conversation without you.

    But it is.

Lemmy isn’t set up to create a set of fairly moderated communities with buy-in from users. It is set up so anyone can be a dictator on their own server.

Admins are legally responsible for anything that gets posted on their server, so they require control. They also put in time and money to keep the server running.

There may be other technologies where all-powerful admins aren’t necessary, like peer-to-peer networks. But then everything gets much more complicated. No more opening a website and entering username and password, now users need to install a client first and use a private key. It’s not clear who is responsible for moderation. Scaling will be much more difficult. Users don’t want to store gigabytes of historical data on their devices, so some servers are still needed. The way Activitypub and Lemmy works is really a hybrid between normal websites which is a well-known paradigm, and p2p which is still experimental. The p2p part is only done on the server because it would be too complex otherwise.

I’m not saying that admins don’t require control. What I’m saying is that there isn’t an ability to distribute admin and mod duties on Lemmy in a more granular sense. There is only one admin head or one mod head and that can lead to mod issues the same that Reddit had.

I suppose this could be improved, but not sure how exactly. Afaik there is no issue about this yet, and anyway we lack development resources to implement everything. Sometimes I imagine how much we could achieve if Lemmy had 2000 employees like Reddit.

This question has been discussed at length in the thread. If people want to boycott Lemmy and switch to Mbin or Piefed, that’s their choice, but maybe not relevant in this context?

Their comment here is valuable, posting this screenshot every time they comment seems counter productive.

At some point one instance is going to have democratically elected mods and admins, that would be interesting.

In the meantime yeah, we are still using other people’s servers

That’s the beautiful thing about lemmy. If I don’t like the current dictator, I can easily switch to a more benevolent leader.

If I block an instance, that blocks all users too, right?

…so was this about his take on the Gaza war? That he thought support for Palestine would lead to a loss of democracy?

No they’re saying that’s what people criticizing the protestors are arguing. I think their take is perfectly acceptable but the power tripping is pretty rough

Yeah, exactly. He’s saying that if you vote for Kamala in order to end the genocide in Gaza and prevent Trump from bombing the West Bank, then you’re letting the fascists win and democracy is dead. He thinks we should all be apathetic towards Palestine and do nothing as a show of “symbolic” support for Gazans.

What does “spits their dummy out” man in this context? Is it just “says dumb shit”?
