        she’s a clone >_>

every single version of her “should” have the same eye and hair color as always - red eyes, blue hair.

i mean, it’s a good picture and whatnot, it’s neat and stuff, but like… the specific endogenous features of a character (and the events experienced by the character) are what define a character.

… i look at this and see a girl dressed in a similar way to Rei Ayanami but I don’t see Rei Ayanami because Rei Ayanami doesn’t look like that due to Rei Ayanami having different fundamental characteristics.

I suppose we can interpose some kind of context that makes this person a version of Rei who got here through having been acted upon by external forces. Who knows, maybe this pic is basically (a picture is worth a thousand words) a one-thousand-word-fanfic about someone taking Rei’s base genetic code and re-cloning her with ‘fixes’ so she’s less psychologically and emotionally stunted, and how undoing some underlying initially extant genetic modifications that Gendo Ikari placed in her to make her an obedient blank slate had the side effect of modifying hair and eye color…

perhaps what we see in this picture is a version of rei emerging from a cloning vat as a more whole person than any prior biological substrate ever allowed her until-now-artificial soul to be. what a nice concept that might be. but it’s not explicit in the work itself, just something that might justify why she doesn’t look like herself.
