I feel you, but Audacity is still the top free audio editor. Perhaps a fork is in order?
Tenacity is a cool Audacity fork
Hopefully development will settle on one soon.

I heard manly of Audacium, but way too much forks run wild RW. Don’t know how many of them will be updated with time
