Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) national secretary Tejinder Pall Singh Bagga on Monday made a sensational claim, saying killed Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was gay and that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau used to like him.

His statement comes amid a diplomatic standoff between India and Canada that ensued after Trudeau alleged the Indian government was involved in Nijjar’s killing. India has asked Canada to provide proof to back the allegations but none have come yet.

India is the world’s biggest democracy. It’s the birthplace of four major religions, Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism and Jainism, and has one of the world’s largest populations of Muslims. It has 23 official languages.

The fact that it’s even still a country is a miracle of democracy (and cricket).

Could be. I don’t know. Different democracy indices set it even below the fake democracy in the US 🤷

The Economist ranks it on par with Poland, which is a member of the EU.

The downgrading of India’s democracy is basically related to the rise of Hindu nationalism, especially under Modi, and the suppression of freedoms of speech and religion. These are serious and concerning issues, to be sure, but like I mentioned, India is a diverse country and the fact that these tensions have been kept in check for so long is the real surprise. Even Sweden is buckling under the pressure of a (relatively) tiny influx of racial/religious diversity.

Yeah… Poland is usually classified as deficient in democracy or sometimes even a hybrid regime. It’s not a good direction in many places. I really hope better for the people in India and everywhere else.

IIRC a lot of Sweden’s issues stem from city level zoning creating segregation by social class. Thus migration with lesser opportunities than natives to move between classes, end up in areas with people who’ve already been abandoned by the system.
