People purposefully conflate sex and gender identity because they want people to think the sexes aren’t real, and use non-binary and trans people as a smokescreen for that. The right wing is aware of this, and it fuels their hate for the trans community who they blame on it. This is currently causing a civil war between the two major political factions to brew.
