Or a small roaming crack in reality pulling or grabbing people in it’s vicinity. A disembodied powerless voice whispering people into catatonic madness maybe (like a Cthulhu understudy or something). Anything really.
Great Ones or Great Old Ones? Personally I’d take the intervention of any higher power at this point.
