Well, whew! As a result of Reddit’s recent spark of genius, the number of users looking for a new home has been growing at quite a brisk pace. In the last 12 hours, over 30 new membership applications were received. This has never happened before in Sopuli’s short history. It’s a bit like what happened to Mastodon when Twitter had its own spark of genius. I’m surprised and also excited.

Anyway, welcome to new users! Feel free to check out Sopuli and Lemmy in general. If you have any questions, you should first check FAQ if the question has already been answered. A list of communities, both on Sopuli and on other instances, is conveniently displayed in Communities and here. If you are planning to create a new community for a topic, you should check there to see if one has already been created and if the topic is fitting for it.

No huh huh! Redditin viimeaikaisten neronleimauksien seurauksena uutta kotia etsiviä käyttäjiä on tullut varsin reippaalla tahdilla. Viimeisen 12 tunnin aikana tuli yli 30 uutta käyttäjähakemusta.

We are in interesting times, im my opinion. They’re interesting because we went from GAFA being suprememe, to the fediverse and threadiverse, to a multiheaded hydra (in the positive sense) where you join instances, that are “local” communities, that can encompass, or block other instances. We go from the monopolies of Meta, Twitter and Reddit, to the threadiverse and Fediverse. I think there is a difference between the two. Social networks are communities, and communities are migratory. Twitter and reddit forget this little detail. They’re encouraging their “competition” to thrive. They’re sabotaging their own stickiness by over-charging for API use, especially since devoted redittors can already pay 49CHF per year. To pay even more for a third party app is punishing the very people that already “invested” real cash.
