Due to various changes in tone, writing, SFX, and level design, compared to Doom 2016. Overall, the changes result in a game that forces me out of my immersion every few seconds. Games are an art form, and not every game can be enjoyed by every person, or for the same reasons. The reasons I enjoyed 2016, aren’t there in Eternal. Period.
That doesn’t mean there can’t be more of the stuff you enjoyed, making it an upgrade.
Both our experiences can make sense. Eternal is an upgrade in every way you care about, but that doesn’t make it an upgrade in every way conceivable.
Third person cutscenes aren’t objectively better than first person ones. Looney Toons sound effects aren’t objectively better than brutal meat noises. Turning up the comedic self-awareness of the writing isn’t objectively better than a ridiculous story that’s funny because internally takes itself completely seriously.
