  • Bonnie Prince Billy is a little all over the map. I hesitate to call him a country artist, but more a guy who plays country music sometimes. Started out in the 90s doing moody lofi indi rock with a country twang, which probably comes naturally since he’s from Kentucky.

Worth listening to the album Viva Last Blues by Palace Music, which is the best of his lofi era, and then Greatest Palace Music is rerecordings of his Palace era songs with a more traditional backing band. Favorite songs include New Partner and Ohio River Boat Song.

He hit his peak popularity around the late 2000’s with I See a Darkness (which Johnny Cash covered) and A Minor Place.

In the 2010s he started doing a ton of collaborations and oddball one-offs and singles. Seems like he started playing whatever he wanted instead of trying to build a career. Got wierd. Good example is when he made an album with the Trembling Bells, a Scottish psych band and did a version of Riding, which is one of his own songs. Super dark country/folk song redone by a very orchestral Scottish psych band. I won’t say you’ll like it but it’s worth a listen.

I saw my first anti-trans meme on lemmy.ml today. It was a screenshot from a Babylon Bee article.

On Reddit, I didn’t like how much things would get downvoted if the sub didn’t want to hear them. It really strengthened the hive mind. At the same time, it was an organic way of rejecting garbage like anti trans memes.

I feel mixed about whether or not they add to a community. I’m not worried about bullying, but I am worried about how they shut down ideas, and encourage everyone to think the same way.

  • We have a six-month old and decided that we don’t want to go too deep into a 529. Neither of us went to college and we’re successful, so we don’t want to assume she’ll want to.

We figure 10-20k is a reasonable amount for her to have in there. We assume she’ll be able to use that much even without college. We’re dropping a few thousand dollars in there now, and I’m going to add a little bit over time. We’re doing a regular taxable account for her also that I’ll be putting more money into.

  • I’m also new at this, and agree that it’s confusing.

I also think that subreddits were ready confusing at first. When reddit was new, I had to explain to people that the front page was garbage and that they had to find the right communities.

As the Lemmy ecosystem grows, I picture communities on certain servers becoming the clear winners, and the equivalent communities on other servers withering.

For example, I’m following the Linux community on both Beehaw and Lemmy.ml. I think the Lemmy.ml one is gonna be a lot busier, and folks will naturally gravitate towards that one. On Reddit it took me a while to figure out that /r/meirl was so much better than /r/me_irl.

  • I feel mixed. The shift towards COSMIC DE got me off of POP_OS. I wanted the newer Gnome features, and that stopped being their focus. I don’t wanna wait 2-3 years for a great DE when I already know I like Gnome. I switched to Fedora and use Pop Shell, and am really happy with my OS now. I also felt like the public shade between Gnome devs and S76 devs was tacky. With that said, I bet Cosmic is going to be great eventually. It’ll be great to have DE in the ecosystem with a focus on performance, UI, customizability, and actually looking good. Even if I don’t use it, I bet it’ll push the other big DEs to get better. Friendly competition is good. Also, it’s ridiculous that you have to go with a WM to get tiling, and that it’s not easier to get in Gnome. Real glad Pop Shell is still available, but I don’t think anyone’s maintaining it so it can’t last.
