@erisir @maikelthedev I missed that Bandcamp got purchased. That is kind of worrying.
Although everything I’ve bought off bandcamp is safe in my own library, I would be sad to see it disappear as a good source of music.
It’s unusual in that its good both to artists (transparent artist compensation) and listeners (downloadable drm-free music files in multiple formats, minimal js on the website, no bs, just music).
It’s been ~1 year since the purchase, I hope the same bandcamp is here in 5 years

@GregoryTheGreat @beigegull I’ve got a few friends using xmpp apps on iOS, mostly snikket (which is a rebranded siskin). Works well, notifications work as they should, so does audio/video calling, and e2ee works too of course. Monal has apparently gotten better recently

@Conman_Signor @JohnLikesComputers so you want to be able to move files to and from the server without unplugging the hard drive and plugging it into another machine?
If yes, that’s entirely possible, what operating system are you running on the server?

@audricd @salarua I second this. If you’re starting, an unused computer (laptop, desktop, raspberry pi or other single board computer, whatever) you already have is perfect. Or an old computer a friend gives you, or eventually a cheap second hand computer.
You can do A LOT with very little computing resources

@poVoq @sexy_peach this a pretty great idea. I wonder if it’s possible to do the waking up part in a more automatic way. As described, there’s a webpage running on a pi from which you press a button to wake up the server. Would be even cooler if incoming requests went through the pi and automatically wake up the server if needed

@HiddenLayer5 OK thanks for the names. What is hardware video decoding support in Linux like for these machines? I had read somewhere that hw decoding support of most Intel chips was pretty good

@HiddenLayer5 @poVoq those odroid PCs also have removable RAM and 2 SATA ports. What models exactly were you alluding to?

@sj_zero from an environmental point of view that’s also a same. There are a lot of thin clients that make very good little servers, and businesses tend to throw away a bunch when it’s upgrade time.
That article is also interesting because it says they are prioritising OEM vendors instead of us mere mortals. I feel that is partially worsened by the closed hardware nature of the raspberry pis, you can’t just give someone the schematics and have them manufacture it
