It really bugs me that someone highlighted and circled this as if they found this ironic error when it was written as a joke headline in the first place and it went clear over their head. The equivalent of red circles and arrows on thumbnails

I see what you’re getting at but the issue isn’t really the assumed multiplication symbol and it’s priority. It’s the fact that when there is implicit multiplication present in an algebraic expression, and really best practice for any math above algebra, you should never use the ‘÷’ symbol. You need to represent the division as a numerator and denominator which gets rid of any ambiguity since the problem will explicitly show whether (2+2) is modifying the numerator or denominator. Honestly after 7th grade I can’t say I ever saw a ‘÷’ being used and I guess this is why.
That said, I’ll die on a hill that this is 16.
Ah sorry just realized what you were saying. I’ve never been taught that. Maybe it’s just a difference in teaching styles, but it shouldn’t be since it can actually change the outcome. The way I was always taught was if you see a number butted up against an expression in parentheses you assume there is a multiplication symbol there.
So you were taught that 2(2+2) == (2(2+2))
I was taught 2(2+2)==2*(2+2)
Interesting difference though because again, assuming invisible parentheses can really change up how a problem is done.
Edit: looks like theshatterstone54’s comment assumed a multiplication symbol as well.
Not quite. It’s true you resolve what’s inside the parentheses first, giving you. 8÷2(4) or 8÷2x4.
Now this is what gets most people. Even though Multiplication technically comes before Division the Acronym PEMDAS, that’s really just to make it sound correct phonetically. Really they have equal priority in the order of operations and the appropriate way to resolve the problem is to work from left to right solving each multiplication or division sign as you encounter them. Giving you 16. Same for addition and subtraction.
So basically the true order of operations is:

8÷2(2+2) comes out to 16, not 1.
Saw it posted on Instagram or Facebook or somewhere and all of the top comments were saying 1. Any comment saying 16 had tons of comments ironically telling that person to go back to first grade and calling them stupid.
This is so cool of you. If it’s not already claimed could I put my grubby mitts on middle earth?
For some reason the way she said “Please speak up” as if it’s that reporters fault really got to me. Fuck off, that volume was perfectly fine. How about get a senator that can hear sounds below 100dB? How about get a senator whose mind isn’t withering away to dust? How about he literally has to forfeit his position due to being too senile to adequately perform in the interest of American citizens?
I live in Erie. Please don’t pay, just stay the fuck out. I was finally starting to see a decrease in Trump paraphernalia littering the rural parts of the county.
I’m finding the opposite actually. Tried it months ago for basic python scripts and it was garbage. Recently started a project where I needed some c++ scripts to flash into an avr microcontroller and it’s been killing it. To be fair I did a decent amount of code myself and also knew exactly what I wanted the program to do. But it has been really good about cleaning up my code, keeping the code consistent through multiple iterations, and understanding my explanations. It teaches me new functions that I didn’t know existed which make the code better and faster. Also, when I was designing the circuit, I could describe what I needed a component to do and it would give me whole lists of, for example, possible types of 5volt voltage regulators and the differences between them.
I equate it to having a coworker rather than an employee. I can’t really just tell it to do stuff and it’ll spit out a perfect script. I need to work with it to make sure it understands my requirements and realizes it’s errors. The biggest advantage is this coworker has encyclopedic knowledge of electrical components and c++.
Definitely. I posted on r/DIY with a picture of a ceiling I was patching in my house. My house is old and I wasn’t familiar with the construction style of my ceiling. I was already well into the job: light fixture removed, ceiling joists exposed, new sheetrock going up. But I wanted to know what the old construction material was and if it was known for being hazardous. So I posted a picture of a chunk from the ceiling with my clearly-already-very-much-started project in the back. Within 15 minutes a mod removed it because “no asking the community how to get started with a project.” I try and fight it but they weren’t having it.
Over the next week I watched so many posts get very popular on the sub with just a picture of a floor, or wall, or bathroom with a title like “thinking of adding outlets to this wall but don’t know how to start. Help.”
Wow that’s really on the nose. I’ve had such similar conversations with higher-ups. Where they’re kind of telling you off but technically you haven’t done anything wrong, you just haven’t bent over backwards like they wanted
That’s true, I can’t complain too much. It’s literally one straight road the whole time too. If nothing else, it’s nice getting to listen to music and podcasts
ho ho hoooooo boy. My company forced some of us to choose what schedule we wanted coming back to the office. They sorted this by job titles. I just so happened to be one of the few jobs they were forcing to come back. I work in IT and I work with developers and project managers mostly in my day-to-day. I love WFH and I’m really not a fan of driving 20 minutes each way out of my way to go to an office and do things that I can do from home just fine. But the board is a bunch of super old dudes who demand that we do it because of the company’s traditional values and culture. So naturally I chose the lowest requirement of days in the office that they offered. Get this, though. When it was first pitched to us that we were being forced to come back despite most of our peers getting to WFH, they said it was to encourage in-person collaboration. Motherfucker, the people I collaborate with daily (the aforementioned PMs and Devs) didn’t come back! They are all WFH! I don’t collaborate with a single person in the office ever!!
And to add to all this, the board has now been giving out hints that they aren’t happy with how many of us chose the lowest number of in-office days for hybrid schedules, they expected us all to voluntarily opt for higher number of days, and they want us all to strive to come in more. Again, god dammit, why would you give us a choice of days if you already had a target in mind of what you’d prefer us to do?? Just make that target a requirement and deal with all of your employees hating you for it. Seeing the numbers of how many people don’t want to be in the office should make you realize that you fucked up making us come back and be more lenient, not force us with an iron hand further into a schedule we all opted to avoid. Fucking insanity.
Thank god you asked this. It’s been like pulling teeth trying to get google to show anything on any fediverse instance
He sure did! And yeah, that’s pretty much how I felt about his beliefs. If everything is decided already, then there’s no point in having any motivation to do anything because it won’t matter. Your destination is decided no matter what, so just do whatever you want regardless of if it’s morally just or not.
It sounds like you know more than this about me so correct me if I’m wrong but my understanding is there’s a difference between just plain omniscience (which sounds like what you’re describing in your comment, and is pretty widely accepted among Christian denominations) and actual predestination (which to my understanding is almost exclusively a Calvinist belief).
I had a teacher in school who believed in predestination. Basically, whether you go to heaven or hell is pre-ordained before your even born and there’s nothing you can do to change it. I told him that sounded to me like I should be a Satanist because if I’m predestined for heaven I’ve worshipped Satan all my life for nothing and I get to chill in heaven. If I’m predestined to go to hell I’ve spent so much time worshipping Satan it probably won’t be too bad. I’m personally not really religious myself but I really was dumbfounded at the whole predestination thing.
Not at all. I agree with your last statement about the kids having a right to know, especially at that age. My family has always been very close and very open about things. If something major like a split were to happen with little to no explanation. Your ex’s concern about the kids seeing her different is founded, though. They will see her different, but they’ll now see her based on how she has behaved. She can’t behave one way but expect to be seen by others as another, nicer, way. She cheated, she tried to have her cake and eat it too, but it didn’t work and now she has to face the consequences of her actions. As time passes, the kids may form different opinions about her and come around to a more loving relationship but that’s up to them now
Wow Perez went from confidently saying he can fight max this year to being in serious danger of losing P2 to Alonso in a matter of, what, 3 races? Honestly he’s been so far off the pace the past couple races that Alonso deserves that P2. I hope he can get it, but fair play to Checo if he can get himself back on track.
I lost my dad to cancer about two week before last Christmas. And my birthday is a few days after Christmas as well. I’ll be damned if I ever feel like celebrating Christmas or my birthday ever again
