Go figure! Lemmy devs already know that reddit was doomed! Sorry this is a link to reddit but it’s the only thing i found!
Nowhere in the linked discussion predicted the doom of Reddit. In one of the threads, the Lemmy Dev said:
“The ability for anyone to host a link aggregator, and build federated communities outside of the largest centralized services, and particularly outside of the jurisdiction of US-based companies like Reddit, has large implications for media sharing and online discussion.”
Don’t forget that the Lemmy Dev is a tankie, and what the implications really meant to them.
And this pitch to /r/linux notably leaves out this other, older pitch…

Hey all, longtime Marxist-leninist, recorder of left audiobooks, and megathread shitposter here.
Posting this in light of a recent one week Reddit ban I earned for shitting on US police, as I’m sure many of us have gotten in recent weeks.
So I’ve spent the past few months working on a self hostable, federated, Reddit alternative called Lemmy, and it’s pretty much ready to go. Unlike here we’d have ultimate control over all content, and would never have to self censor.
Obviously as communists, we agitate where the people are, so we should never abandon Reddit entirely, but it’s been clear to all of us from day one, that communities like this stand on unsteady ground, and could be banned or quarantined at any moment by the white supremacist Reddit admins. This would be both a backup and a potentially better alternative. Moderation abilities are there, as well as a slur filter.
Raddle isn’t an option obviously since it’s run by this arch anti tankie scum, ziq.
I wanted to ask ppl here if they’d like me to host an instance, and mod all the current mods here.
Note the line: Obviously as communists, we agitate where the people are. I’m pretty left-leaning myself (I draw the line at authoritarianism though), but they’re very open about using their platform to push an agenda. The instance that post mentions at the end became Lemmygrad. Lemmy.ml and Lemmygrad are the same people - the “.ml” in “lemmy.ml” even stands for “Marxist-Leninist”.
I joined Lemmy.ml in 2020 after this pitch to /r/linux… and left shortly afterward when I saw who ran it. Thankfully we have other options now (hello from Kbin!).
Luckily Lemmy is open source and a lot of new developers have started contributing to it.
Crucially, it could be forked if things go south with the developers.
Also, this is my first comment in a Kbin magazine (from Lemmy), hi Kbinners!
Could we please keep the instances apart from the software? It doesn’t matter at all what the political views of the devs are. You don’t support them if you’re using Lemmy on an instance that has nothing to do with the two devs. They created something that’s larger than themselves. I’m getting tired of the LEMMY DEVS ARE TANKIES outcries.
At the time I joined Lemmy, lemmy.ml and Lemmygrad were basically the only places in town.
Things have changed nowadays. But I’m still very wary of lemmy.ml, and as long as the devs are in charge of that instance I will keep warning people about it.
I trust that they won’t let their political views get in the way of maintaining Lemmy itself, but it’s important that people have context instead of stumbling into it themselves.

It’s not like anyone can’t see it and fork it if they do. It’s like complaining about the political views of the architect who designed your house. You’d be able to notice the Lenin-shaped staircase landing.
Thank you, I’m tired of everyone taking this too far. I’m also hardly against authoritarian regimes of any kind, left and right, but this is a generic use open source software we’re talking about, not a political party. I support the platform and I appreciate all the devs for what they do, it’s really good software and it makes me happy as a programmer myself to see social media code that isn’t filled with bloat and spaghetti code or malicious anti privacy features

Yeah no fuck that.
Good thing you don’t need to use their instances.
I enjoy Kbin so much because it reminds me to the old reddit, especialy with the topbar where you can see all the magazines. And I enjoy Lemmy because as for now, it has features that Kbin doesn’t have (Kbin is younger than Lemmy).
But there has to be a distinction between Lemmy, the service, and lemmy.ml or lemmygrad.ml, the instances. It’s true that those instances are administrated by tankies, and sometimes it’s a bit risky to post anti tanky content (don’t do that on Lemmygrad, please). But if you look at the code, there is no tanky stuff written in there. Just regular arrays, loops and so on.
Besides, there are absolutely wholesome and good servers on Lemmy, like lemmy.world, beehaw.org, or sopuli.xyz, all of them free of tankies, as far as I know.
I think, linking Reddit is not that much of a problem for me. However, I like to view Reddit posts through a privacy respecting frontend like Teddit, which - at the moment - still works.
The same post through Teddit: https://r.donttrackme.fossware.space/r/linux/comments/guklhr/we_are_the_devs_behind_lemmy_an_open_source/
Thank you :)
I agree, but there’s no way that’s going to work after tomorrow, right?
Three years already…I bet 99.9% of current users, myself included, didn’t know that Lemmy existed two weeks ago
I learned about Lemmy at the time I joined kbin and went to kbin because of all the things I found about the Lemmy creator.
I only found out 2 weeks ago about lemmy lol not gonna lie
e: I didn’t know about the fediverse either!
Joined 12 days ago. You are correct.
I joined lemmy last year, a couple of weeks after I knew that Elon Musk wanted to buy Twitter.
I heard about it last year when I was getting into Mastodon during all the Twitter drama. When I visited, it was a ghost town. Glad it took off now though, I’ve been looking for an excuse to jump off reddit for years.
It’s amazing the explosion in stuff from when I joined to now. We also have to give credit to all the people running Lemmy and kbin instances. They all did amazing things to keep/get things running during an explosion of user growth. Given how fast things changed for them, I’m sure they’re going to need a cup of coffee or something, so you all should try and throw a $1 or $10 to their respective donations bin. It will help in the long run. If we want this to make it, we have to support it.
I like how the Developers says :
… and the Reddit redesign has become a bloated anti-privacy mess.
…and some more interesting speech :
