I love seeing all these new sites grow. I think the removing of old reddit will be the bigger exodus. Right now users can still use old reddit and ad blockers.

It’s really nice of spez to do his enshittification in phases. First he announces the API charges, then he does the AMA, then the 3rd party apps die, then old.reddit gets shut down. Each one will drive more users to the Fediverse, but since it won’t be all at once the various Lemmy/kbin/etc. instances will be able to meet the demand.

Yeah… well… I mean 50 milion of users won’t evaporate in a day. But I would love to see them loosing a good chunk of them.

I hope a fair few move over, but I’m afraid the number of 3rd party app users is lower than we anticipate

Doesn’t matter if not all of them come over at once. There’ll be enough people to ensure that threaded Fediverse communities can remain active, and as spez does more and more to flush Reddit down the toilet we’ll be ready.

if million users moves to lemmy, someone would immediately go to server room with veggie peeler and turn (current) potato servers into fries. this would mean load increase of few times over

Lemmy isn’t one server room. I’m not gonna pretend to know enough about it too understand how a million new users would affect the platform as a whole, but if they are spread across instances as intended (which hasn’t worked perfectly so far, admittedly), things should be ok.

Apollo is the only reason I’m still on the snoo site, but I still feel dirty being over there. I’ll most likely bail on it come Saturday.

What exactly was digg and what happened to it anyway? I used phpBB forums and IRC as a teen, then didn’t interact with social media in general for some years, then eventually found my way to Reddit (with a low-key stint on Facebook to stay in contact with relatives across the globe in-between). The only interaction I had with digg was seeing Firefox extensions for it during what I assume was its hayday.

Digg was literally Reddit before Reddit. They redesigned the website to make more profits and people migrated to Reddit. Eventually Digg was sold.

It was exactly like reddit. A link aggregator with comment threads. Then they fucked it.

I used to call it a reddit aggregator because everything that was on reddit showed up on Digg the next day. That’s why I eventually made the switch to reddit at the time. May as well get the same content a day earlier.

How did they fuck it? I mean, I’m sure they employed some kind of enshittification, but what were the main things they did and what was it that made them breach the trust thermocline?

Came to Reddit due to the Digg exodus, and now just starting to figure out all this Lenny business. First post here, via Memmy. Excited to see where this goes!
