László Toroczkai, leader of the Hungarian far-right Mi Hazank party, has announced claims to Ukraine’s Zakarpattia Oblast if Ukraine loses its statehood as a result of the war.

Way back in 2014 (? - iirc), Putin secretly offered the other (4?) western oblasts of Ukraine to Poland, with Zakarpattia to Hungary - Sikorski (Poland fm) revealed and denounced this.

Seems like Hungary wants to test if it’s possible to get kicked out of the EU and NATO

Honestly, if Ukraine does fall, and Orban or similar nationalists are still in power in Hungary, and Putin “grants” the regions to Hungary, and they try to incorporate it into their territory… I actually do think it would be grounds for active dismissal from both the EU and NATO. As in: they’ll make a new process to kick people out. Because Hungary doing that would be a fundamental refutation and undermining of both organizations stated and unofficial regional and global goals.

They won’t be able to make a process in NATO to kick Hungary out because it will require Hungary to agree to adding that process.

The EU has a method to suspend Hungary’s voting rights, which would let them proceed to add other rules without Hungary’s intervention. Canada proposed adding suspension and expulsion mechanisms to NATO back when the treaty was being negotiated in 1948 but after a bunch of debate they were declined. Instead, it was expected that any country that needed to be kicked out of NATO would be in material breach of the treaty. At that point everyone else in NATO would agree that Hungary has effectively withdrawn from the treaty.

I mean, at the end of the day, treaties only have power because everyone agrees that they have power. All of the other NATO powers could spontaneously agree to forget about that old piece of paper they signed and sign a new one instead that doesn’t have Hungary’s name on it.

Russia can’t maintain its own specious claims to Crimea and the Donbas, what makes you think they can maintain 1 cm of other people’s shit? They’ll just hand that cm to you? Is this how political leaders bid for attention and power now? What, making promises you can’t keep and leading parades is not good enough for them now?
