Dungeon Meshi is a well liked manga, and an adaptation by Studio Trigger is now airing. It’s about a party of dungeon adventurers. They unfortunately get killed, and all but one of them successfully revives. Out of money and food, and with some party members leaving. The heroes decide to venture back into the dungeon to save their lost companion, surviving by eating the monsters they kill.
Hilarity, but also a fantastic story and good character development, ensues.
Remember not to spoil anything if you’re a manga reader. Suffice to say if the adaptation stays at this level, we are in for quite a ride.
Is this a Netflix exclusive? I’d love to be able to watch somewhere else

To be frank I thought “eew” when I saw the Netflix logo - I remember Gokushufudou, the anime adaptation was rather… awful. But I love the manga series and gave it a try, past the logo - and I’m glad that I did.
Marcille being picky with the food was hilarious. Also Senshi and Laios’ immediate connection - one likes cooking with monsters, another likes everything monsters.
Netflix has done little more than fund anime studios by buying out exclusivity in advance for a series that’s already planned by the studio. They don’t have anywhere near the involvement like with their own shows.
There isn’t really such a thing as a “netflix-anime”. Sure, they buy anime, but they do not make it.
The episode does a good job setting up the world, and the characters seem charming so far. I’m looking forward to escalating danger and hilarity.
Haven’t read the manga yet but probably will if the anime hits all the right beats.
Watched the first episode with my wife, and I enjoyed it. I had read the manga previously, although it had been a long time since I read the parts the anime is covering.
I noticed it’s rated TV-MA for nudity, but I don’t remember any nudity from this series. Anyone know what that would be referring to?
Hm. Technically there are two female characters later in the series that appear topless, but one is feathered and the other is a cat-person with fur…
There were also the mermaids and dryads, maybe a couple other monsters?
No nipples anywhere, but I don’t know if that matters for the rating.
Yeah, I could remember the cat/feather characters, but didn’t think they would count. I was wondering if maybe I forgot about a nude monster or something.
I’m finding it a bit hard to get into. The absolute apathy shown towards their failure and cold calculations about getting back just doesn’t grab me right off.
This was my issue with the first episode as well. On one hand there is enough urgency to skip preparations prior to diving back into the dungeon to save their party member. On the other hand there is plenty of time to indulge in elaborate monster cooking.
The two halves of the show just don’t match up in tone. The narrative side (save dead sister) is dark and tries to drive things forward. The cooking side is lighthearted and silly, slowing things down to focus on food and slice of life things.
We are only one episode in, so there is plenty of time to bring these into alignment, but it felt off in the first episode to me as well.
The party isn’t in as much of a hurry as it might seem, it hasn’t been explained yet, but dying inside the dungeon means your soul gets stuck there, making it possible to revive you an indefinite amount of time later.
How much, or if any at all, of the body is needed for this to work, is unknown. Laios asks if Chilchuck or Marcille are aware of anyone being resurrected from poop. For all they know, it can be done.
The cooking stuff does clash a bit more in the anime than the manga, I’m realizing. In the manga it goes by in a few pages and then the party is back to dealing with the dungeon. But you’ll notice they eat what they encounter, and look for food when hungry. Aside from that, they keep at making progress. IIRC they even prepare some preserved foods at some point in order to cut down on cooking time and enable eating while walking.
They live in a world where resurrection magic exists. You might’ve noticed that Marcille thinks to herself that “my first death was to a slime” when one attacks her soon after they enter. Death just isn’t something permanent that the adventurers really worry about, so they aren’t that bothered by Farlyns “death”.
The fact that Farlyn got eaten is an unusual circumstance, and even Marcille, a long-lived elven expert in magic doesn’t have the answers. That bridge will get crossed, though.
How the magic in the world works is something the story will elaborate on. And Laios flaws as a party leader is also something which gets explored. That fight with the dragon in the beginning isn’t the last we’ll see of those other party members who left.
But I’d recommend approaching the start of the show a bit like a slice of life. The more serious story stuff will be coming later, once they get closer to the dungeon level that the dragon is on.
I mean if resurrection magic would be a thing you wouldn’t give a shit about seeing corpses either, its just normal people that take a long nap until woken up by magic basically.
I enjoyed the first episode, so I’ll keep watching. The art style is interesting.
The whole thing makes me think of Campfire Cooking, or that 1 episode of “How a realist hero rebuilt the kingdom,” where they do the gem cast with the slime recipe.
The formula of the show has been laid out, so now I’m curious how their journey goes.

You can say that again. Trigger usually has super distinctive style, but it’s almost completely gone in favor of very closely matching the style of the manga. Trigger movement is still around, but details like the “pencil” style line-art was kinda jarring with how noticeable it was, at first.
