Historically the area went back and forth from what would be considered modern day Thailand to Cambodia. Angkor Wat was originally built as a Hindu city, as were many Cambodian monuments. I was unaware that the Vietnamese cared that much, though they also have historical claim there. I would imagine this is about relations more than anything.

It wasn’t a mistake. Cambodia takes that very seriously, as do the Thais.
