Unfortunately the only date they announced was 2024. So, no idea yet if it is early or late in the year. The announcement was made as part of a TV special hosted by several of the cast members. Something I didn’t realize is that this movie was announced all the way back in 2021. So, this finally brings some resolution to what has been an open-ended release for the past couple years.

If you haven’t watched Overlord yet, this movie depicts events that happen in the same time period of season 4 of the show (see comments below for more clarification, it’s complicated). Synopsis of the first season from AniList:

The story takes place in the year 2138 when virtual reality gaming is booming. Yggdrasil, a popular online game is quietly shut down one day. However, the protagonist Momonga decides to not log out. Momonga is then transformed into the image of a skeleton as “the most powerful wizard.” The world continues to change, with non-player characters (NPCs) beginning to feel emotion. Having no parents, friends, or place in society, this ordinary young man Momonga then strives to take over the new world the game has become.

I really enjoyed season 1 of the anime, but found season 2 to be very lack luster. Does the show get better after season 2?

It varies. The movie will cover an arc that many, including me, consider their favorite.

If you enjoyed season 1, there will be more of the same good stuff, though the anime has dropped the ball on the adaptation in places. (Season 2 in particular was quite restricted in budget). Season 2 also introduced the Lizardmen, which thankfully take a backseat for the rest of the story.

Season 4 finished up an arc that has been happening in the background for the whole series, in a very satisfying way, IMO. And the Holy Kingdom arc is another that will significantly develop Nazarick’s position in the new world.

I appreciate the additional information! Glad to hear the lizardmen take a back seat after season 2, because that’s what got me to stop watching season 2. When I finish my current show I’ll jump back into season 2 of Overlord.
