This is a rant post and I apologize but I had to talk about this. Most subs are coming back online and not saying ANYTHING about the next steps. Only a handful of subs are going indefinite. I checked the front page for the first time today after leaving the a couple hours before the day of the blackout and what do I see? Subs are up, and comments and upvotes are up to the general average before the blackout.
I checked r/gaming to see their recent post (WHICH HAS OVER 68k UPVOTES), and I see a comment with over 500 upvotes saying in a nutshell, “You guys need to calm down, they’re a company and need to make money”.
Along with a couple other comments saying similar things. Are you fucking serious? You can’t even have the fucking balls to say, “This is a company that has consistently screwed over its users and I need to take a stand and quit my addiction”? You’re just gonna sit and do nothing? Fuck you. You’re no fucking better than u/spez. You’re all a bunch of fucking hypocritical liars for shitting on spez and the admins while talking about how you’re “done” with Reddit and you won’t support this.
Go touch grass you fucking addicted cowards. I’m glad I made the switch to Lemmy if it means I don’t have to interact with dumbfucks like you.
It is rather disappointing, to say the least. I was reading /r/technology and there are a ton of posts to the tune of, fuck you, I just want my official Reddit app to work. It really bums me out, but I guess the silver lining is that those scabs are exactly the trash we probably don’t want on Lemmy.
r/RedDevils was quite the eye-opener after they re-opened. So many comments about how awful it was being without the sub for 2 days and how dumb it was
“just use the reddit app it’s fine”
“I don’t even use third party apps, why should I get punished”
and other such comments. Makes me glad I setup a new Red Devils community over here
To them I say “just use another website, it’s fine”
NHL and NBA fans were throwing absolute tantrums that “their” subs we closed during the finals.
Don’t worry, they will notice a difference when the content eventually stops or drops in quality, or at the very least a large portion of it will move here
As for the app thing, they’re clearly ignorant and don’t know what they’re missing. That or they grew up with gross filtered feeds that were literally engineered to be toxic and addicting. Even I remember how addicting that shit was before they went a bit too crazy with ads and irrelevant posts. Used to be you could scroll and scroll thru Facebook and you wouldn’t run out of interesting posts from friends, groups etc. Now it’s all pages I don’t even like or follow. Adpocalypse 2.0
Until Apollo is officially dead I’m still redditing, but I’ve bookmarked the Lemmy homescreen and placed it where Apollo used to be.
I’ve noticed that since the blackout reddit has gotten noticeably dumber.
The people staying are mostly the dumb ones so people will slowly leave as they get sick of sifting through all the dumb shit and migrate here. Then I’m a few years, just like reddit, the dumb ones will get sick of sitting in their own shit and migrate here and ruin Lemmy.
As new platforms become easier to adopt the bar to entry becomes lower. As new communities become more popular they get targeted by advertisers and trolls. Then something new comes along, people bail for a newer but less- refined community and the cycle repeats. It’s disappointing, but it seems to be the circle of the internet.
I’ve seen it with MySpace, Facebook, Digg, and eBaum’s World. It’ll happen here too.
Guess we will just have to mod the shit out of this place until then
I think we can take it easy for now. We have some time before reddit is all the way down and the trolls get bored of trolling each other.
This is what’s better known as a thinly veiled warning…
Yeah i have seen a good amount of “I don’t want to be inconvenienced for third party apps” and that Reddit is already giving assurances that mod tools and accessibility apps are exempted from the changes.
I’m not a mod but I thought a lot of mods use tools built into the third party apps that just aren’t present on the official app. So Reddit saying mod tools are unaffected seems like a promise they don’t have the ability to keep.
Yeah, as an avid user of Apollos “Comment Nuke” option, the thought of having to manually delete 20+ comments one by one is… not amazing.
It is an addiction … I’m a recovering alcoholic with 25 years of sobriety so I know what it means to be addicted.
The general rate of people recovering from an addiction comes in thirds
A third recover and hold on to their recovery
A third recover but relapse again and again all their lives
A third never recover and can’t grasp the change they need to make (and grasping isn’t implying a test of intelligence, some people are just wired this way or do so much damage to their psyche that they can no longer change, no matter how intelligent they are)
People leaving Reddit and going somewhere else will affect some but not many … most will stay … but it will be the ones who leave and start something new that will grow the new community that can succeed in the future.
Reddit was once new and it was an alternative to old systems … now Reddit has become like the sites they stood in contrast to years ago. We are the new Reddit … give it time and things will grow.
