Norway will donate additional NASAMS air defenses to Ukraine for a sum of NOK 335 million. Some are sent from our own warehouses to ensure fast delivery to Ukraine, while more is ordered from the industry for delivery later. Ukraine is dependent on military support from allies and partners going forward in order to be able to resist the Russian aggression.

  • Air defense is a decisive part of Ukraine’s defence. Ukrainian authorities always ask for more support for air defense, and give this a high priority. This will be a major contribution to their ability to defend themselves, says Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram (Sp).

Russian attacks with drones and missiles are a major challenge in Ukraine, and support for air defense is therefore absolutely central. Norway has previously donated NASAMS air defense to Ukraine on several occasions . This has been a major contribution from the Norwegian side. The donations have been highly valued and experience shows that it has had a very good effect. The need is still great, which is why the government has now approved an additional donation.

  • The Norwegian NASAMS system has a high accuracy. It helped save Ukrainian lives and prevent the destruction of buildings and infrastructure. The air defense is also decisive for Ukraine’s ability to protect its military departments, says Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram (Sp).

Donate from the Defense’s holdings first

Since it is urgent for Ukraine to get more air defense in place in the short term, the government has decided to donate additional NASAMS material from the Armed Forces’ own holdings. Sound assessments of the consequences for the Armed Forces’ operational capability and national preparedness are the basis for all decisions by the government regarding donations of military material from the defense sector.

  • The material can be sent within a relatively short time, and will be important for strengthening air defenses against Russian attacks this winter. These are demanding assessments, but Ukraine is in great need of support, and it is important for our common security that Russia does not win with its warfare, says Gram.

Order more from the industry

In addition to donations from its own holdings, the government will also donate a package of eight launch units and four fire control centers to NASAMS. This is the same amount as Norway’s total donation from NASAMS so far.

  • We order this material from the industry as quickly as possible. The donation will therefore take place some time in the future, says Gram.
