Welcome! It’s different, for sure…But excited for what we can all make of this community (and Lemmy, of course!).

I’m excited to see how “POV pushers” vs mod censorship works out. One of the big problems I saw on reddit, ( especially /r/Oakland) was outsiders pushing a negative POV and mods reacting by censoring all posts with the same POV.

I don’t want the place overrun by Texas MAGAs, but when local crime posts are censored because it pushes a POV the mod doesn’t like, it destroys trust in the entire sub.

Absolutely. I don’t think any city or area is “perfect” by any means…But censoring posts isn’t the way to build trust in a sub.

Hello world! My first post ever on Lemmy. Was hoping to see a bay area community here and looks like this is something at least. Now to hope it grows :)

Reddit had separate bayarea and sanfrancisco subreddits, where most of the posts about San Francisco specifically would go to the sanfrancisco subreddit rather than the bayarea one. Should we do the same thing here?

It wasn’t just San Francisco that had a subreddit. Most of the cities did. I spent a lot of time in the Oakland and Santa Rosa subs.

I wonder what the vibe for this sub will evolve into. I feel like r/bayarea often felt like a crabby person on Nextdoor. People fixated on negative stuff and not the cool things that are all around us.

Would love to see more awesome content about our area that highlights cool shit. That being said, while I don’t care for fixating, I don’t mind honest posts.
