Solutions that rely on a single means of producing energy (i.e. microwavable bag, electric heat blanket) have a huge disadvantage compared to hot water bottles because hot water bottles can be “powered” through all kinds of water heating methods. Stove top, induction plate, water boiler, fire, etc.
I never quite understood the advantage of this over an electrical heat blanket though.
Edit: OK with a hot water bottle you can fall asleep.
