while enforcement is different from passage, this is still an incredible thing to get into the state budget, and it’s a big win for socialists who have been at the front of pushing for the bill:
The Build Public Renewables Act (BPRA) will ensure that all state-owned properties that ordinarily receive power from the New York power authority (NYPA) are run on renewable energy by 2030. It will also require municipally owned properties – including many hospitals and schools, as well as public housing and public transit – to switch to renewable energy by 2035.
Will their efforts include nuclear?
as far as i’m aware of no, but not because there’s an objection to nuclear—the NYPA just currently doesn’t own any nuclear power facilities (most of its energy production right now is hydro, interestingly). i believe it has previously, including the Indian Point reactors at one point, but it sold those off to private actors a long time ago. it could theoretically acquire the two existing nuclear power plants in the state, but idk how practical that’d be
There are small more affordable reactor designs now. Hopeful, that is something they will invent in. I am worried Germany’s energy sitution will repeat itself.
